The 5 Best Budget-friendly Things to do in Cayo Guillermo, Ciego de Avila Province

September 24, 2021 Malia Yoakum

Immortalized by Hemingway in “Islands in the Stream,” Cayo Guillermo is perched on Cuba’s north coast between the Bay of Dogs and the Atlantic. It is home to four all-inclusive resorts. Five miles of fine white sand and gorgeous, clear green waters, including the spectacular Playa Pilar, offer picture perfect sunning spots. Fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities beckon from more than six miles of coral reefs. Flamingos and many other birds live in its lagoons, forest and jungle.

It’s a 10CUC peso cab ride each way or 5CUC each way on the bus that stops at each hotel every hour up until around 5pm-ish (if you take a cab there prearrange with your driver when you want him to come back to get you - best tip we got) Rent a day bed or 2 deck chairs under a covered & elevated shaded space for 10CUC & they (an older Cuban gentleman wearing a hat - think softened-Cuban-style-grandpa with a fanny pack) give you 3 free drinks (tickets exchanged) at the beach bar as well, (cocktails, beer - didn’t see wine as an option) which also has premium pineapple filled fruit filled drinks & light snacks (Pringle’s etc) at a reasonable price Rent just 2 beach chairs for 4CUC There are no hotels on this beach area - though catamarans do include the beach on day tours & pull in daily They also offer excursions from this beach but really it’s fantastic on its own & worth checking out. There is a small decent restaurant right on the beach at the end of the boardwalk that serves chicken & lobster dishes as well as beer and wi e & it has a thatched roof covering but still outside and open. Was there in March and the sun is intense - pack a good sunblock, hats & cover ups. Bring TP - the bathrooms were usable but not idea - keeping in mind it is Cuba ;)

We took a hobbie cat over to the island from Playa Pilar for $20 CUC each. This included return transportation and lunch with 2 drinks. Great meal and the staff were very nice. The island is beautiful with pine trees, hermit crabs and beautiful sandy beaches. Nice side excursion for an afternoon.
