Essendon Railway Station

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

Essendon Station dates from the mid-19th century. In conjunction with the completion of the Buckley St underpass, the station has been upgraded. Due to the lockdown, fewer passengers are traveling into the city and parking at the station. The station is a handsome red-brick structure. It is manned by railway station staff during the day and PSOs at night. It has toilets and a waiting room, which is useful in cold and windy weather.

Ascot Vale Station

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

Ascot Vale Station dates from 1860, making it one of the earliest sursviving stations in Melbourne's metropolitan railway network. It's a good-looking structure, made of red brick. It served the private Melbourne to Essendon line, but the line folded in 1864. The line was revivied under government ownership in 1871. It's still earning its keep, as one of the key stations on the Craigieburn Line. The suburb of Ascot Vale underwent a gentrification process and now it is a moderately expensive area, close to the City. The Station is convenient to the 57, 59 and 82 trams.

Former Es&a Bank Branch - Moonee Ponds

Reviewed By 619jeffry - Essendon, Australia

Observers with an interest in the history of finance will remember the ES&A Bank, which amalgamated with the ANZ Bank in 1970. The English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank was originally an English bank, as was the ANZ. The ES&A Bank in Mt Alexander Rd was built in Modern Gothic style. The building was built of polychrome Hawthorn brick, a common design in the 1880s.. The roof is grey slate, pierced by capped chimneys. The former bank is on the corner of Mt Alexander Rd and Bank St. By the way, the bank has a slightly ecclesiastical appearance. It seems as if it is in use; what for is unclear

The most recent time we visited St John's was for an orchestral concert. The church is a marvellous venue for such performances, due to its great acoustics. On a more prosaic level, there is good parking and public transport is convenient making it suitable for occasions such as weddings and funerals.
