Houyeh Village

Love to spend some time far from cars and tall bulidings? You may need to spend a day or two in Houyeh village. Houyeh is located near Isfahan city center ( about 20 minutes by car) and benefits from several cultural and natural attractions. Zayandehrood river passes through Houyeh during its way towards Isfahan. There are also seven pigeon towers with more than 200 years of age. These buildings were built by local farmers centuries ago in order to collect pigeon feces which is proved as an effective organic fertilizer. Houyeh is also well-renowned for its traditional, religious ceremony called "Ta'zeeyeh" which is held in Moharram (the first month of the year in arabic lunar calendar) every year. This is a religious ceremony to show and rememeber how Imam Hussein and his family were killed by enemy troops in Karbala more than one thousand years ago. In recent years, a Zurkhaneh (a special place for doing Iranian traditional sport) has been built in the village, and it is worthwhile to spend some time in the evening at Zurkhaneh watching Houyeh's people performing some unique sport activities. After spending about half a day in the village, you may feel a bit hungry. Well, do not worry! Houyeh's women are famous for their cooking! You will be hosted by a local family and will enjoy a healthy, traditional food which is cooked with fresh and mostly organic ingredients. That's it! Enjoy your stay at Houyeh village:)

Underground City of Nushabad

Reviewed By themudgeerambler - Mudgee, Australia

Rode our cycles from Kashan to here and it was well worth the rough road and the mad traffic. I believe this was rediscovered only 13 years ago by a man digging in his backyard. You start the tour with a look at big underground cistern and then go one floor of the labyrinth. There are 3 levels and you can see in places down to the other levels but visitors dont go down there. It is pretty busy with a lot of people going through but its possible to have a guide speak to you about the underground city in English. May not suit the claustrophobic but otherwise fascinating!

Jalali Natural Refrigerator

Yakhchāl is an ancient type of evaporative cooler. Above ground, the structure had a domed shape, but had a subterranean storage space. It was often used to store ice, but sometimes was used to store food as well. The subterranean space coupled with the thick heat-resistant construction material insulated the storage space year round. These structures were mainly built and used in Persia.
