Woven with wild greenery and Gaelic legends, the Emerald Isle is one of Europe’s most prized jewels. Rugged Atlantic beaches and mystery-shrouded sites rub shoulders with the cosmopolitan cities of Belfast and Dublin, where literary history and warm Irish hospitality are always in abundance.

We sponsor a donkey so as we were holidaying in Ireland decided to visit him. The sanctuary is tucked away so we were pleased we had sat nav? Unfortunately when we visited in November the weather was dreadful and we couldn’t walk around the trail as it was closed to prevent damage. However the donkeys were all warm and snug in very deep straw with plenty of food. They were able to walk across the yard and a couple braved the weathe4 to come to the gate. We had a cup of tea and a chat to the lady running the #hop and purchased some beautiful Christmas cards. We will definitely go back when we next visit Ireland @nd hope for better weather!

We are a small animal facility, just a short drive from Newcastle West in Coolyroe open for general admission visits and private interactive animal experiences. All visits must currently be prebooked through our website www.wildencounters.ie
We have been to plenty zoo's, pet farms and wildlife parks but this was one of our favourites and we'll definitely be back. A lovely variety of animals from raccoons, meerkats, goats, pigs, emus to a reptile house full of all sorts of different creatures. It was great to get the talks on some of the animals too. We got a talk on the cute meerkats, Tango the macaw and Barney the owl. Would definitely recommend a visit here. Great for adults and kids.

A large aquarium filled with countless species of marine life.
Who doesn't love an aquarium? I've been to a good few of them at this stage and this is up there as a really good one. Great for families or anyone looking for an interesting hour or so.

Ireland's Wildest Attraction. Fota Wildlife Park is set on 100 acres on the scenic Fota Island in the heart of Cork Harbour. It is a unique place where you can come face to face with free roaming animals and birds from all parts of the world. So if it’s a kangaroo that hops in front of you, or a ring-tailed lemur, which jumps down from a tree, each visit is sure to bring its own fantastic memories. Fota Wildlife Park features the recently opened Asian Sanctuary—with Asian Lions, Sumatran Tigers, and Indian Rhino. The cheetah run, tropical house and giraffe crossing are also must-sees. The development of the Asian Sanctuary over the past five years has enhanced the Park as an iconic international visitor attraction as well as serving the core values of conservation, education, and research. Facilities include cafés, several play areas, picnic areas and a gift shop. Accessible by train and car.
Last time we visited Fota was years back, this time it was so much different ! The new area seems to be lovely and is very enjoyable, animals seem to have plenty of space to run about which is lovely and the staff is pleasant

The Achill Experience contains an Aquarium, an exhibition on Island life, a Replica deserted village boley house complete with artifacts of the era, an art exhibition and a History Room as well as an audio visual room showing documentaries covering historical information from Achills past. It is a great all weather facility, ideal for people of all ages, families and school groups. There is also a stand alone Gift Shop.
We all enjoyed the Achill experience...from my 2 year old nephew, my sister and I and the grandparents...we all learned so much about the sea life around the island. Tom was brilliant at explaining it all and keeping it exciting and engaging. The little nephew loved touching the starfish and baby cat shark. The fish are kept in very natural surroundings and Tom assured us that they are released back into the sea after a while "a little holiday" as Tom put it. Great place to spend a few hours especially when it's raining out. Nice little gift shop is an added bonus.

Open seasonally, Tropical World at Alcorn’s, Letterkenny, has best be described by patrons as both “Donegal’s hidden gem” and the “one must see attraction to visit in Donegal”. Tropical World is a fully licensed zoo with an astonishing array of animals, from a dazzling display of butterflies to the world’s smallest monkeys alike. The incredible butterfly house is still the star attraction, with hundreds of amazing tropical butterflies in free-flight around you as you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the rainforest. Leave Letterkenny’s own slice of the Amazon and you’re greeted by the sounds from the tree topped canopies, with beautiful birds of all shapes and sizes from around the globe calling you on. Only after you reach the reptile house can you begin to meet the lemurs and miniature primates that call Tropical World home, along with owls, prairie dogs, our family of Meerkats.
We spent a very enjoyable day here yesterday with our 6 year old and 1.5 year old despite the fact that the weather wasn’t so great! Most of Tropical World is undercover so the fact it was raining when we arrived didn’t matter. Thankfully it dried up for long enough that we got to the outdoor parts but we were told to come back to reception and borrow umbrellas if it was still raining! There is a great selection of animals and birds as well as an undercover play area which our two loved. The six year old was just mesmerised by all the animals, especially when she got to hold a bearded dragon and touch a snake!!! She also loved the butterfly house where the butterfly’s fly freely around you, we even saw one land on someone! The 1.5 year old didn’t have the same interest obviously but was still happy to spend a few hours here. We also ate at the wee cafe on site and the food was gorgeous! We will definitely be back when we’re back in letterkenny!

Belfast Zoo is located in north Belfast. The zoo's 55 acre site is home to more than 1,000 animals and 150 species. The majority of our animals are in danger in their natural habitat. The zoo also carries out important conservation work and takes part in European and international breeding programmes which help to ensure the survival of many species under threat. Belfast Zoo is one of the top fee-paying visitor attraction in Northern Ireland, receiving more than 300,000 visitors a year.
A wonderful place in stunning surroundings. Which even without animals would be a pleasure. But add a zoo and add the magic. I spent Easter Sunday here with my niece. People think zoos are sad now but not this one. Most of the animals have been rescued or conserved. The elephants are rescues and the Barbary lions are no longer found in the wild. The silver back Gorilla is also a rescue. These animals now have the best of homes. The giraffes were majestic and my niece equally loved the small tortoises and birds and fruit bats in the “rainforest”. She loved the small farm having never seen even a pig before! The play park has everything lovely design. And what better on a sunny day than to sit with the flamingos? I think we locals forget what we have up the hill. In the whole day I don’t think I saw one poo, the place was clean and well kept a tribute to the hard working staff , and the keepers had character, knowledge and obvious love of the animals when giving their talks. It was busy today, but do go when it is quiet. The only thing that let it down was the food. Over priced and aimed at the most common denominator, chips and chicken nuggets all round! Where were the salads, pies, savoury pasties, toasties, wraps? Waiter service? Come on this could be improved on big time. We had to queue again for 2 ice lollies with everyone queuing for food by the time we got served they were melted! people would flock if the catering was decent in a superior location. Next time on such a sunny day my advice is bring a picnic!
