Papagiannakos Winery

Reviewed By shwang17 - Los Angeles, United States

Our wine tasting and tour was led by Stefano at Domaine Papagiannakos. The tour was incredibly informative as Stefano is the wine blender at Papagiannakos and generous in sharing his knowledge about the winery, wine making and wine in general. We were given a tour through the cellar, bottling, packaging and tasting room. While Domaine Papagiannakos focuses primarily on white wines given its Attica region, we tried a couple of reds as well. For our tasting, we opted to try four wines which was paired with some appetizers. We tried the Old Vine Savatiano as that was the domaine's most popular wine and I believe the only wine in the Protected Geographical Indication Markopoulo. We also tried the Erythros which is an Agiorgitiko-based wine. We had tried Agiorgitiko in its homeland in Nema but I have to say I was much more inclined towards the Erythros which had a bit more acid and less oak and vanilla. We also tried the Assyrtiko and Merlot. Similar to the Italians and perhaps the rest of Europe, Greeks view wines as food and to be drank with food so Stefano offered a lot of great food pairings for the wines we drank. We did not get to try the Retsina which according to Stefano goes excellent with tzatziki. Perhaps next time! We were incredibly pleased with the wines and even more impressed with the prices as compared to France or Italian wines. We probably should have bought some cases of wine given the maybe 100% tariffs by US. Thank you Stefano, we hope to be back soon.

We had a great evening learning about local Greek wines with Konstantinos. Athens Wine Tasting experience includes 5 wines, a basket of bread and breadsticks, and an optional cheese and cold cut platter. A small join-in group, our session had 5 people in attendance (due to covid-19 limitations), which gave it a cool party feel. Konstantinos is a great tutor and teaches about how wine is grown and made, the differences between the wines, the wine culture in Greece and how to taste wines. The session is focused on Greek local wines, so he explores the different Greek regions and how their climate, soil, traditions and terroir overall affect the wines they produce. He responded on all of our questions throughout, helping us understand the finer points. The wine matrix is engaging and informative Overall it was a great experience and well worth our time and money. We ended up buying a few bottles of the wine we tasted to take home. We highly recommend it

Zeginis Winery

Zeginis Winery is located in Marathon and produces wines from the privately owned vineyards, cultivated by the Zeginis family for many generations in Ramnountas. In our vineyards we cultivate to a large extent Savvatiano, as well as Chardonnay, Agiorgitiko and Merlot, while recently the Assyrtiko variety has been planted and the vineyards of Zegginis continue to expand. Kokotos Estate

The Kokotos estate dates back to the 1970s when George Kokotos and his family settled in Stamata, abandoning city life to build their home and create a small vineyard in the hills north of Athens. In 1980 they planted a vineyard of seven hectares with international varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. Assyrtiko and Gewurtztraminer have been added since and the range also includes wines from Savatiano, Roditis and Agiorgitiko. Their aim was to produce wine of the highest quality. The decisive factors contributing to their success are the excellent terroir, with soil which is poor in organic matter but rich in trace elements, the altitude of 420 metres and the well-drained slopes of the vineyards. The vineyards are certified organic. The winery is open to visitors by appointment only. The estate also includes: - An Olive Grove - A Permaculture Vegetable Garden - A Poultry Farm - Beehives
