Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

We went on the food & wine walking tour of Funchal in December 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Sofia is a fantastic storyteller and took us to all the best places in the city, including Madeira tasting at Blandy's; a walk around the markethall (go back on a market day - a fascinating experience in itself) and a stunning family-run biscuit place. A great way to discover the city and the tour was well-paced, with plenty of opportunities to sit down and chat to the other foodies on the tour too. I'm hugely grateful to Sofia for her excellent restaurant recommendations - it was my partner's birthday during our trip and with her insider advice we were able to celebrate in style with a big meal on the day.

I joined a morning food and drink tour of Funchal with Sofia Maul of Wine Tours Madeira. She’s more of a storyteller than a traditional guide and regaled us with tales about herself and her family, among the more usual tour tales of history, culture, flowers, food and wine. Our first stop was Blandy’s, famous for its Madeira wine, where we had a couple of samples of the wine and heard about how it was created. Next up was Calhau for a taste of white Barbasano wine, scabbard fish, passion fruit crostini, then Uau cacao for artisan chocolate – delicious. Then we had handmade cakes and biscuits at Fabrica Sto Antonio then poncha – local rum and lemon cocktail – at Farmacia do Bento. We saw scabbard fish at the local market then ate the fish, plus pork in wine and garlic, in sandwiches at Cristalina chique, followed by baked cheesecake from Confeitaria. All the samples of food and drink were delicious and made us want to try more – and the stories and anecdotes from Sofia were fascinating, informative entertaining. It was lovely to be in her company for a few hours and get an understanding of Madeiran culture through its food and drink. Highly recommended.

We had an amazing day with Nuno. He took us to off-road areas, he was patient with us ans taught us all of his knowledge about the plants and the local history. Madeira is the whole world in a tiny size: within a 15 minutes drive one can feel in Ireland, in Hawai or in Central Asia. All of these with the soft-temper of Nuno and the Portuguese. I was concerned this day-trip could be a tourist rip off as one experiences sometimes. But it was not and we had an unforgetfull day. Do not pass on this day-trip!
