Maybe your local zoo has lions, leopards, zebras or elephants. Maybe they even have wildebeest. But we bet they don't have 1.3 million wildebeest—never mind 1.3 million wildebeest in migration, with predators in hot pursuit. It's one of the most awesome sights in nature, and you can see it at Masai Mara in southwestern Kenya.

In March 2017 I booked a Safari on Maasai Mara Train with Wilson. I went to Maasai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru and I really enjoyed it. I was the only one who booked with him so I was in a group with people from another agency and everything went well. Only on the first day we had a little car problem and missed the evening game drive but the next day we did a longer drive instead. Unfortunately I didn't see rhinos and leopards but many other beautiful animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, cheetahs, buffalos, hippos, crocodiles, monkeys, ... And I liked the landscape around the two lakes a lot. Because I had such a good time on the Safari I also booked a Mount Kenya trip with Wilson in April 2017. We were 2 tourists, Wilson as a guide and his brother as a cook and went up to the Lenana peak. There was a list what to take with me but Wilson provided everything that I didn't have including walking boots, sleeping bag, gloves and a flashlight. The last night before the summit at 4200m was quite cold and we had to wake up around 3 the next morning but seeing the sunrise on Mount Kenya was totally worth it. And on the way down where it was getting warmer again breakfast was already waiting for us. By the way the food was much better than I expected it to be on a mountain. We had chicken one day and fish the other day and always a lot of Chapati. I had 2 really good tours with Maasai Mara Train and can highly recommend them. Thank you Wilson!

I had never been on safari before and thought I would explore options-i was traveling alone and feared it might be too expensive but I found Direct Kenya safaris. Mr Nduso got back to me very quickly with a seven day trip including stops at amboseli, lake Nakuru and Masai Mara national parks. His quote was very reasonable and immediately booked -and I can assure everyone that my reward was a top notch trip in every way. The accommodation was great, meals were always good. The trip always involved long distances between the parks but the driver/guide Ibrahim is a superb and careful driver who made great time and was a great company as well. Every day and in every way this trip exceeded my expectations. It was really an exceptional experience.

Exclusions: Tips, Park entry fees ($80 per adult / $45 for children) valid for 24 hours, Alcoholic Beverages, Maasai Village visit charges (typically $10-20) (optional)
Interesting tour but be prepared to walk over fairly steep uneven sometimes slippery terrain. Don’t wear sandals, wear good hiking shoes or boots. Our visit was after heavy rain and was very slippery, not a problem if you’re used to hiking. Also wear suitable clothing as you’ll probably get dirty but after the tour, you can stop at a stall where you can get your shoes cleaned and enjoy a cold drink for a few shillings.

TLDR; this is a tremendous experience for the adventurous traveler; if you have an open mindset about meeting new people, enjoy hiking and the outdoors, and don't mind an occasionally rough ride, this is an incredible trip and well worth your time. Having never traveled outside the US, I wanted to go big on my first solo trip with the 62-day excursion from Pretoria to Nairobi. Since it was such an extensive trip, I was looking for the most value for my time, based on price, activities, and safety. I backpack often, so beyond basic comfort was not a priority for me, which turned out to be a good mindset to adopt since we camped nearly the entire trip, & rode in a truck with no AC (Namibia gets hot!). Tip - be ready to retrieve the rain fly for your tent during unexpected 3 AM rain showers! However, nearly all of the sites we stayed at had the option to upgrade from camping to comfortable indoor accommodations, which was a nice option to take advantage of occasionally. Once we reached our site for the night, we began our daily rotating duties, which included helping to cook, clean the truck, and do dishes, which I think added to the experience and helped bond our fellow tourists. Traveling solo, I felt safe at all times with our guides, drivers, and locations. My trip was split between two guides, Crispen, then Pete, and they were great company that looked out for us and kept us safe and informed about everything around us. Our guides were familiar with the paths and knew everyone at our destinations. Nothing surprised them. Our drivers were impressive as well, with Harmony and Francis keeping us safe on the often-tumultuous African roads. Navigating both urban and off-road environments in our trucks was no easy task, and Francis even proved his mechanic skills during the occasional break-down. The variety of locations we stayed at were simply incredible. From Cape Town to the deserts of Namibia, the Okavango Delta to Zanzibar Island, the mixture of urban and remote landscapes couldn't have been better. We saw every animal you can imagine. On a trip like this, an open mindset is key. Traveling for two months with strangers can go any number of ways, but due to this trip, I now have lifelong friends scattered across the globe that I can't wait to visit. This wasn't just a vacation, it was a lasting, eye-opening experience that I believe everyone should try if possible. I can't recommend this trip enough. I wish I could go back to January and do it all over again.
