Bắc Hà is a rural district of Lào Cai Province in the Northeast region of Vietnam. It is the capital of the region of the Flower Hmong, one of the 54 minorities of Vietnam and of the six groups of Hmong people. It is famous for its Sunday morning market, where thousands of locals gathered, the women dressed in their very intricate handmade costumes (it takes three to five months to embroider one by hand), as well as for the Saturday morning smaller market of Can Cau, 18 kilometres (11 mi) north of Bắc Hà. The town is enjoying an economic boom thanks to tourism, centered on the markets and, more and more, excellent trekking in the mountains north of the town.

We were on a 16 day trip through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand organized by Realistic Asia and absolutely loved it! They organized all of the flights to Vietnam and then home from Thailand, as well as the internal flights. They also booked the hotels and the tours, although we did organize some additional tours ahead of time on our own for the leisure days. Each of the tours tended to be run by people local to the city being visited and each of the tour guides was very professional and very enjoyable. The itinerary was such that we started in Vietnam, beginning in Hanoi and then Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh city, then to Siem Reap, Cambodia and finally ending in Phuket, Thailand. Each of the places was different and had things to admire and explore. Phuket was the beach place, although we found Hoi An had a great beach as well. We were very impressed and very happy with each and every hotel we were booked into. They were all very clean, nice and safe and had great staff. Would happily go back to stay at every one of them again. The travel agent who worked with us, David Huynh (Dat) was amazing! He was super responsive both before the trip when we had questions and during the trip when we were unsure about anything. We were on the leading edge of the Coronavirus pandemic and he actually noticed that our original flight to Vietnam was going through Seoul and we would have been forced to quarantine upon landing in Vietnam so he went ahead and changed our flights just days before we were to leave. We then got a notice that our flight home had been cancelled and that we needed to catch a flight home a day later. He went ahead and extended our hotel stay another night. We didn't even have to pay. We did not know what to expect when we booked the tour but after having gone we would enthusiastically recommend Realistic Asia and we would definitely go on another trip with them.

We pick up you from your hotel in Sapa at 7am to go to the largest Flower Hmong market in Northern Vietnam at Bac Ha which is held on Sundays. The market is a 110km drive so the early start is essential. Your private tour guide will be with you every step of the way to make sure you have a memorable day. The market is alive with the bright colours and extravagant costumes of the local people, here you will meet Flower Hmong (Red Hmong), Black Dao, Tay, Nung, La Chi, Phu La and other tribal groups who come from far and wide to buy and sell a wide variety of goods and livestock, to exchange news and to renew friendships. In the past the market was a centre for trading horses but now that motorbikes have replaced them it is more common to see buffalo, cows, goats, fish and other livestock being traded. The market opens at around 7.30am and closes mid-afternoon.
Inclusions: Private car or mini van to the market & back to Sapa, Food at a local restaurant where a variety of foods are available for your delectation and delight. You can even try the traditional local lunch of Thang Co (horse stew) and strong corn wine!
Exclusions:
Zen has a great energy to her. Her traditional upbringing in Sapa combined with her now modern life in Hanoi means she can answer any questions you have in regards to life in Vietnam. English is great, very positive personality, will adapt to any specific requests you might have in terms of itinerary changes or restrictions. We did a 5 day tour with her in Ha Giang and couldn't be more happy with the trip.
Bac Ha is the largest Sunday Market as well as the most colorful one in the area. Here you can meet mostly the Flower H’mong and then the Phu La, Black Dao, Tay, Nung minorities. The market offers a variety of local products that are rarely found in other regions. The animal trading market is also very interesting. On this trip, you will also have opportunity to enjoy a boat cruise in Chay River.

We contacted Mr. Chinh Pham of Private Indochina Tours (PITourist). Pham is his family name and he is often referred to as simply “Pham”. From the outset of our dealings with him we benefitted from his incredible expertise. We stated areas of activity that would interest us. He came up with a remarkable package, assembling transportation, guides, hotels, restaurants and a couple of internal flights. He always replied promptly and assisted us in securing visas. PITourist put together an unforgettable and stress-free experience. Everything ran smoothly and punctually, and over 21 days we encountered no problems. We requested guides who spoke good English and drivers who would drive sensibly. He delivered. Xuan was an outstanding guide in Hanoi and for our 11 days touring in northern Vietnam, and Cung, of H&D Transportation was an excellent driver. In Hue and Hoi An our guide was Thien. Given the nature of our stay there we had several drivers and they were all sensible. Pham even provided a local SIM card for our phone and often made contact to ensure everything was going well. Put simply, the services we received from Pham, our guides and drivers, was outstanding throughout. We will have no hesitation about using Private Indochina Tours/PITourist on our next visit. As a result of Pham’s attention to detail and enthusiasm we enjoyed an amazing visit to Vietnam. We left with memories of a beautiful country and friendly, hardworking people. We will always cherish those memories. Geoff & Diana Rowland
