The 10 Best Volcanos in California, United States

October 14, 2021 Milan Banda

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

Wow! What a majestic mountain! The snowcaps, cloud and cloudless covers (depending on the time of year, the weather & time of day), views are all majestic! The drive from north-south has the more impressive sights from I-5...especially when you come around the curve in the road!

Shelters here to sit and two trail bench's to rest on the way. Trail wanders to crater with hard pack, sandy and with lava rocks also. Use care to not stumble and fall, lava will cut you badly. Easy ramble part uphill and the it gets steep. Take you time. Drink water to keep you hydrated Refuse cans at trail head - pack it out and do not leave. So much to do but we had so little time! Even if you just enter the park and drive through the entire route up and back down the mountain is an amazing experience. By the time we got to the top , it had dropped to 37 degrees and was snowing! You will see streams, lakes, the devastated area, ice, snow, valleys, and the sulfur works all from the drive. I bet they have amazing trails that we didn’t explore but would love to come back!

If you had to miss Yellowstone with its bubbling cauldrons, Sulphuric Works will give you a little glimpse into bubbling mud pots, steaming streams and steam vents. The parking lot is small, so there could be a problem when it’s busy. Everything is right next to the road so it’s easy access.

Mono Lake Tufa State Natural Reserve

Reviewed By Cali4niahiker - Merced, United States

You can get a really good view of the entire Mono Lake from a nearby volcano, Panum Crater. It takes a bit of an effort to hike this 2.1 mile loop trail, it has some steep sections and the trail is gravel. But besides views of Mono Lake with South Tufa, you also get great views of the Sierras and a few smaller nearby volcanos. From Highway 395 take 120 East. The Panum Crater sign is easily missed. It’s on the left side of the road. When you reach South Tufa you’ve gone a bit too far. South Tufa was closed in late October when we visited. Not sure when it will open again.

Salton Sea Mud Volcanoes

Reviewed By StationToStation - Los Angeles, United States

Sitting just off of Salton Sea is a large mud/clay field. Water and steam are forced from below to create bubbling pools of water and mini volcanos. The mud/clay piles on top of itself from the openings in the ground to create what look like mini volcanoes. It's very cool and worth the trip given there is plenty other things to do while you are in the area. Definitely be prepared to get muddy if you go anywhere other than summer. Wear high hiking boots and bring a pair of back up shoes and a bag to store your walking boots that get muddy.
