The 10 Best Traveler Resources in Bay of Plenty Region, North Island

April 20, 2022 Roseanne Arnett

The Bay of Plenty (Māori: Te Moana-a-Toi) is a large bight in the northern coast of New Zealand's North Island. It stretches from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to Cape Runaway in the east, a wide stretch of some 259 km of open coastline. The Bay of Plenty Region is situated around this body of water, also incorporating several large islands in the bay. The bay was named by James Cook after he noticed the abundant food supplies at several Māori villages there, in stark contrast to the earlier observations he had made in Poverty Bay.

I went there for maps and suggestions all,of which can be found in abundance. Friendly information officers at the counter. And a curio and souvenir shop with a large and quite unique selection of NZ-handmade items. Bought several Maori steel jewelry and small wooden boxes with pearl inlays. Glad that I did because I never came about the same items at other places.

Had a lovely time in Te Kaha and surrounds ! We appreciated the i-Site team's advice and effort so much, they really added value to our brief visit to celebrate my parents recent 60th Anniversary. The Te Kaha Holiday Park was incredibly laid back, nearby to where our parents stayed at the Te Kaha Resort with equally friendly staff and AMAZING sunset views across the bay from their room. We LOVED the Pacific Coast Macadamias lunch in their shady gardens..thank you for assuring us by placing a call ahead of time that they were happy to host with our little dog. We enjoyed all their freshly baked goodies and purchased a ton of chocolate and honey baked macadamias to bring home. We hope to revisit the area again sometime soon, plus we discovered the pop up seriously great coffee cart in garden (off main street of Opotiki)...which provided shade, water in bowl for the (spoilt) dog lol The toilets provided at rear of Opotiki i-Site were clean and we thank you for the warm and friendly welcome to my elderly Mother when she popped in on our way home....who, it has to be said LOVED her few days in stunning BOP/Pacific Coast Highway road trip.  Please know that you are doing an excellent job, our grateful thanks.

The staff here are a credit to Kawerau. It is not a town many people visit, and this is a shame. Yes, it's a mill town, and it looks fairly ordinary... and that is why people should look, and make the turn-off, because there are hidden gems here. The Tarawera Falls are one, and I've reviewed them separately. Another is the hot pools - which are free, and a very welcome alternative to the pricey alternatives at Rotorua. I imagine they would be even more welcome to families travelling. Back to the I-Site. We got our permit for the Falls promptly and with a smile. They keep a shelf especially for local artists to sell their crafts. The friendly staff pointed out some well-made wooden boxes, made of Rimu, on sale for only $30. Like any I-Site they will book you in here there and everywhere, but they know their town, and it's hidden gems like the back of their hands. Call in - they're easy to find, off Plunket Street in the town centre. (They can even offer some excitement - White Water Rafting can be booked for you, on the Tarawera River near town, rapids grades 2 & 3.)

i-SITE centres throughout New Zealand offer a range of several helpful services, from finding accommodation, to helping develop an itineraries that will take you on a magical mystery tour of the many extraordinary sights and sounds this God-blessed land offers visitors. The Tauranga team have been handling my demands and enquiries since I started coming here in 2007, when visiting my daughter's family based in Welcome Bay. What impresses me is they are a complete team, with any one of them taking the lead in satisfying my questions, not tamely stating that someone else will do so. Great experience, yet again on this trip.
