This Italian-speaking region in Southern Switzerland is on the border with Italy. Bellinzona is the capital, and Lugano is the most important city in the canton, known for its beautiful waterfront, steep hillsides and gorgeous lake views. Castelgrande is a lovely medieval castle overlooking the city that has recently been restored. The Centovalli Railway is a scenic train that operates between Locarno, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, traveling through the breathtaking "Hundred Valleys." Lake Como is nearby, the home of People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” George Clooney.

This was a great day trip on a hot, humid day in Locarno. We went by car from Locarno, which took about 1 hour. Not a lot of English speaking tourists up in the Robei Mountains. We took a 15 minute ride in a funicular to the restaurant (24CHF per adult, 12CHF for kids 5-12 and free for kids 4 and under). There are many hiking trails to choose from, depending on what you want to see. There is a glacier to explore in one direction and a reservoir in the other. Some hiking trails are much longer than others, we went on a 50 minute loop around the reservoir. It was just enough hiking for our 5 and 7 year old children. You can also hike to the top, if you choose. Once you are done with your hike, you can have food and drinks at the restaurant before heading back to San Carlo. The road back to Locarno is a bit tight at times. At one point, my 7 year old had us pull over because her stomach was uneasy from the winding road. All-in-all, it was a nice family day.

At an altitude of 1,624 metres, the view sweeps endlessly and embraces the valleys of southern Ticino, Lake Lugano, the valleys of Luino and Lake Maggiore. The horizon stretches as far as the snow-covered Graubünden and Bernese Alps, the Valais peaks with their glaciers and the docile, swarming Po Valley. Monte Lema is an enchanting panoramic peak, the most impressive in Italian-speaking Switzerland, and a nature oasis from which a network of hiking trails follow the crest of the mountains and wind their way along the ridges. Thanks to its climate and conformation, Monte Lema is the destination for daring sportsmen, but also a perfect destination for families. The Lema is the ideal starting point for exalting the magic of paragliding or hang-gliding and experiencing nature trails and the thrill of free descents with a grappling hook.
