The 10 Best Tours in Uspallata, Cuyo

June 2, 2021 Flossie Demartino

Uspallata is a village, and an administrative district, in Argentina in a scenic location on the road which crosses the Andes between Mendoza and Santiago in Chile. It is located 100 km (62 mi) west of Mendoza and was once served by the now disused Transandine Railway which passed through the town on its way from Mendoza to Los Andes in Chile. There are several items of interest in and around the village including "las bovedas", somewhat strangely egg-shaped kilns dating from the early 17th century which were used to extract gold, silver, zinc, copper and other metals from minerals mined nearby. Worth a brief visit as they are only approx 1 1/2 km from town, complete with a small museum, notes include the fact that some of the refractory bricks can still be seen with "Rufford Stourbridge" from the English West Midlands stamped on them; a brief reminder of Britain´s industrial heritage. The road to the Chilean border incorporates some of the most dramatic scenery in the region, the Andean mountains in this part being part of the backdrop of the highest peak out of the ANDES, Aconcagua at almost 7,000 metres above sea level. There is a brief glimpse of the stunning mountain from the road some distance from another point of interest, an ochre coloured bridge spanning the Rio Mendoza 72 km from Uspallata that seems to have been made from sulphur-bearing hot springs.

We enjoyed this tour very much. The organisation for pickup and drop off was good and we got to see a bit of Mendoza city. The first winery was lovely and the guide very informative. Wine was tasty too. They harvest at night and the day after we were there (March 4) they hold a night harvest for the people. Would have been great to be there!! The second winery was a family one and the philosophy of love and family was very interesting - and the wine was good!! The olive oil place,Laur, was interesting too and the oils and balsamic were delicious. And then the sweet wine!! This was another great winery with lots of passion put into the wine. They also sold Malbec icecream which was delicious. We had four excellent tours and the guide on the bus was informative and kept us on time - started at 2 finished at 745pm. I would definitely recommend this tour if you have limited time to see Mendoza wine region.

My friends and I booked the zip lining and water rafting here and had a really fun time. All the staff was super professional and friendly, they made everything seem so easy. The lunch was also really delicious. My only 1 draw back was that there was a long wait between the 2 excursions (2.5 hours). Overall definitely recommend booking this tour while in Mendoza!

Our tour was supposed to be in English. Our guide only spoke Spanish. I do not speak or understand Spanish so my friend (who is not fluent in Spanish) had to translate for me. Plus the tour date and time were changed from the original voucher we received.

I Do not recommend this company I did a pre-planned day trip of Argentina. It was arranged they pick me up from nearby hotel. I msg to confirm and they changed the plans and I had to meet there which wasn’t Easy to find. I attempted many times to contact them via the phone numbers they provided and concierge also attempted, but they never responded. Then I only got half the tour. Try other more reliable and reputable companies.

Usually don’t write reviews but by far the best tour we had in Mendoza. Booked a last minute tour as out flight was late. We visited three wineries and the owner Fede was the driver and guide. Brand new comfortable pick up. First we visited a smaller winery that specializes in white but did also have some great reds. Second winery was Acheval Ferrer, one of the best wineries in Mendoza in my opinion. Great experience and beautiful place. To last, we went to El Enemigo and had a superb luch and wine tasting. Fede is well recognized in the industry and we got to meet Alejandro Vigil. Even got a few signed bottles! Thank you so much Fede for an amazing tour.

Did this trip in February. To sum it up it consists of 11 hours in a minivan to visit three churches in Chiloe, none of them is interesting unless you are an academic interested in the technical details of wooden church building in the mid 19th century. However good the guides are (and our guide was excellent) this piece of Chile is not worth visiting. The drive to Castro in Chiloe island comprises a 70km motorway run to a ferry and then more than two hours driving along a scruffy, semi industrialised road with no redeeming features to Castro. On arrival the only logical question is "why bother". There are so many beautiful places in Chile I would suggest that people give this excursion a swerve and prevent the total waste of a day of their lives.
