Experience a close-up view of the heavily silted mangrove swamp, a haven for its inhabitants of reptilians to crustaceans and fishes such as crocodiles, water monitor lizards, otters, mud skippers, mangrove crabs, prawns, edible jellyfish, shell fish, monkeys and more. The swamp sustains many different species of trees, the most important being the black and red mangroves. It is used as piling in constructions and is also processed as charcoal. The Irrawaddy or snubfin dophin, inhabits the rivers, estuaries and shallow coastal areas. The Santubong area remains one of the best places in Sarawak to view this unusual looking marine mammal. When seen, they swim and dive around open waters less than 30 meters deep. You will need a keen eye to spot the dolphins and they are best seen when they frolic near local fishing boats that are hauling in the catch!

Drive from Kuching for about 45 minutes in the direction of Santubong or Damai area. Board a small boat (12 capacity of passengers) and begin your cruise to the mouth of the Salak River. You should be able to spot the elusive and rare schools of Irrawaddy dolphins which are quite common in this area. Our boatman will stop nearby Bird Island to see the sea birds before proceeding to Satang Island. Head out to the South China Sea for Satang Island. The island is part of the Satang National Park where a turtle conservation project is located on the island. Green Turtles and the rare Hawksbill Turtles often lay their eggs here. Look in on the hatchery to get an idea of conservation work being carried out on these highly endangered sea creatures. Spend time on the island's white sandy beach or go snorkelling. You will be able to enjoy the corals and the marine life in the crystalline waters of the island.
Inclusions: Use of Snorkelling equipment, Lunch Pack, Soft Drinks & Drinking Water, Air-conditioned vehicle, All Fees and Taxes

This was part of an organised trip. If you can only park near the gate it is a 1.5km walk. The rangers call the orangatan after 9 so you can see them feeding at 10. We where very lucky to see one, however it is pot luck. Also if they spot one you need to move to the place quickly. It is not for the infirm or probables with walking. I would also recommend mosquito replant and long trousers with trainers. They are leeches and ticks in certain areas. It is worth the trip.
