We (two adults and two children, 12 & 15) did a full day tour of the Somme with Olivier as our guide and were incredibly impressed with Olivier’s organisation and knowledge of the area and the battles of WWI. As a descendent of an Australian soldier of WWI , I was interested to see where my great great uncle served and for my children to gain an understanding of WWI from an Australian historical perspective but to also see where their uncle fought and the sacrifices made. Olivier had researched where my great great uncle fought, was injured and died and took us to all these places on a customised tour. We also visited the Villers Bretonneux Memorial and Sir John Monash Centre.Olivier’s commentary was incredibly insightful and his depth of knowledge about WWI and the Somme battles was excellent. Thoroughly recommend Chemins D’histoire for those not only interested in seeing where their ancestors served but also for anyone interested in the history of The WWI battlefields of the Somme, France.

This tour covers the major sites of the Battles of the Somme in 1916 and 1918, it's an easy day trip coming from PARIS for the day (1h10 by train). Our tours start and finish just outside the AMIENS train station. Our first stop is at Villers-Bretonneux to visit the Australian memorial and the new John Monash centre (if open on that day), then drive on the 1918 battlefields to discover the sites of the August 1918 allied counter-offensive. After a lunch stop at Albert, we cover the sites of the 1916 battle: the impressive "Lochnagar" mine crater, Pozieres, the Thiepval memorial to the missing and the preserved battlefields of Beaumont-Hamel. Our tour groups are kept to small size ( up to 8 people)
Inclusions: Access to all the sites and museum fees, Driver / Guide WW1 expert, Air-conditioned vehicle
Exclusions: Lunch, Snacks
Excellent tour with great knowledge by the guide. As it was during the pandemic we had a private tour as it was just myself and my son

I can't speak highly enough of this experience. The tour group comprised approximately 20 people, all Australians, who had travelled to France especially to attend Anzac Day services on the Western Front in April 2019. We travelled in a very comfortable coach for the entire tour. We are a family of 4 and really enjoyed visiting all the important battlefields that are special to Australians, including Pozieres, Bullecourt, and Fromelle over 2 and 1/2 days with the climax being attendance at the Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux. The tour also included a visit to the John Monash Centre and the Victoria School, which was absolutely fantastic, and we also stopped in Arras and Albert on two of the touring days for lunch. Estelle was most helpful with the booking arrangements prior to our arrival. She answered my many questions promptly and left me feeling confident that this was a very experienced crew. Nothing was any trouble for Estelle and she also undertook research for us about our family members, who had fought in the area during WW1. She even provided us with a photograph of our relative who was killed in action, which we had never seen before. We were very touched by this. Lea was our guide and wow, she really has an amazingly in depth knowledge of the history of the area and all aspects of how the battles unfolded. She is a born historian and exudes such passion that made the stories she told about the war all the more compelling. Lea was also able to point out to us the exact location of our relative's death at Pozieres, which was important to us as he has no known grave. The information about the exact location exceeded our expectations and was a highlight for us as we would not have thought this level of detail possible. Lea is also a really lovely lady, who was a pleasure to travel with over the 2 and 1/2 days of our tour, as was Estelle who was a pleasure to deal with also. It was sad to say good-bye when the tour was over. We are sorry to see that the tour is cancelled for 2020 due to Covid19 as it is a really wonderful experience. I commend this tour to all Australians who may be looking to spend a few days exploring and being educated about the Somme battlefields in 2021, particularly as the tour concludes with the not to be missed Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux. Yes, it was very cold and a bit wet, but I would do it all again. Thank you Terres de Memoir, especially Lea and Estelle. I love your work!

Immerse yourself in World War I history with a day trip from Paris north to France’s Picardy region. Visit Aisne and Marne, two major parts of the western front where some of the deadliest American battles occurred. See trenches and other traces of battle as you explore Belleau Wood, and pay your respects at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery. Head to nearby Meaux to visit the Museum of the Great War, a moving testament to the scope and tragedy of WWI.

Thankfully, the battlefield is largely as it appeared in 1815. Rolling hills, farm fields, the wooded and walled Hougoumont (well-restored) and la Haye Saint (not so much). Still, the vibe and the atmosphere is evocative of the crucial Napoleonic struggle that took place here. The museum is excellent. Creative displays, lots of artifacts. The great Lions mound is a bit of a distraction. But it does afford spectacular views of the entire battlefield. Two downsides: the busy road that runs right through the field, north to south, is a little offputting. And Napoleon’s command position was overgrown with shrubs when I was there.
The Swin Golf Château Balias allows to discover this exceptional place. Ignore date visited, this was a cancellation review on this company. Date of visit was required for review. We scheduled a private tour for August 2019 but an itinerary change forced us to cancel our tour, Reading their conditions and submitting our request for refund was met with a professional and prompt refunf of our Deposit. Murielle is a very gracious in all her emails and we look forward to a rescheduling of our WW1 USMC battlefield tour in the near future. Thanks Murielle!!
