At first glance, it’s hard to believe that vibrant Norfolk Island could have a dark past. Yet during the 19th century, the now-peaceful Australian retreat was a convict colony, home to criminals who’d been banished into exile. Today, the archaeological remains of the penal colony have UNESCO World Heritage status and are revered for their historical significance. You can visit the settlement’s remains, an eerie yet beautiful collection that includes a jail, a cemetery, lumbar yard and salt house.

On 8 June 1856 a total of 194 people, descendants from the Bounty, arrived on Norfolk Island from Pitcairn Island aboard the Morayshire. This consisted of 40 men, 47 women, 54 boys, and 53 girls. They arrived in cold, wet blustery conditions. Few had ever been to sea before, They were seasick, homesick, and heartsick. The journey of 6,00 km / 3,700 miles took five weeks. They arrived to a recently abandoned penal settlement set aside for the ‘worst of the worst’ it was full of ghosts and memories. It was a large and frightening testimony of man’s inhumanity to man. The 1856 untold story will follow their journey in the World Heritage Listed Kingston area.

OVERPRICED, OVERRATED, OVERCROWDED, UNDERWHELMING Was very much looking forward to this tour but the experience turned out to be one that I'm very glad I will never have to repeat. The tour left on time but when we got to the house we waited outside for 20 minutes until the door was finally opened by the tour guide who glibly announced that she didn't hear the bus pull up.We were then ushered into the entrance way where the tour began There were 19 of us so it was a bit of a squeeze. After making our way through a couple of rooms including a riveting tour of the laundry we were all seated in the fernery where, after speaking for about 10 minutes, our guide went silent. I can only imagine this was a technique she employed to elicit questions from her audience. These were slowly forthcoming but when it got down to a discussion on how the tiles were cleaned and how she watered the ferns I found myself slowly losing the will to live. The whole took two and half hours that I'll never get back.

Capitalizing on Convicts is it worth it. Every guest on the night are dressed in convict outfits - picked up during the afternoon with a $30 cash deposit which is returned on return of the outfit. The company advertises a free glass of wine for every guest. We asked for our wine and guess what they don’t serve it anymore! Why? They said that no one would drink it. We had our tickets which stated one glass of wine included and demanded our free glass, which they reluctantly gave us – no choice of red or white – white only. No wonder no one would drink it! Why on earth would they offer a wine, that is not drinkable, when it would make much more sense to offer a choice of red or white, of drinkable wine on entering. Patrons would be highly likely to go and buy more. Makes no sense. The room is filled with convicts and the show begins. A bawdy show with plenty of jokes and laughter throughout the night. The food - The convict audience stirring and delivering the passable soup and collecting all the plates. Mains were a line up for corned beef and roast pork with vegetables, again passable, the audience then taking their finished plates up to get their desert. Unfortunately, not all deserts were the same, pot luck in that area. When finished you took your plates back. In reality no waitress service, a great way to save money and at $90 a pop, one would expect better. Would I recommend this night, well no, as there are other much better organised dinners on the island on offer.

We did this on Saturday night. We were very surprised when we got there at 5pm after being picked up and were served the main meal immediately, it felt too early. The food was delicious, local fish with chips and a huge array of salads and bread, the coconut bread was amazing. There was a gluten free option available for the fish. We brought drinks at the cash bar. The location was lovely and we were able to watch the sunset. The singer with guitar was really good. We were then entertained by some island dancers. Dessert was also served but was one dish, no choices, but lovely. We had a very pleasant evening which wound up at 730pm. The biggest problem was eating so early, not sure why we couldn’t have had the entertainment first and then have the meal served. All in all a great night out.
