Gonzaga's Residences tour. Mantua owes its beautiful Renaissance monuments to the Gonzaga Lords, who ruled the Mantuan Duchy for almost four centuries, and during their reign they made the city into a Court of grand splendor. The Gonzaga loved both luxury and power, and they lived in somptuous residences such as the huge Palazzo Ducale, their royal residence and the amazing Palazzo Te, intended as place of leisure and pleasure. The Ducal Palace with the gorgeous “Bridal Chamber” by Mantegna and the Te Palace by Giulio Romano’s genius, are some magnificent residences built by the Gonzagas, and an absolute must-see.

The Signora ks unusually bright, well schooled, charming and pleasing. She is an exceptional woman who helped us grasp Mannerism architecture and art, regional history, and the impact of the region on Italian history. We toured Palazzo Te, the Ducale Chambers, and the Spousal Chambers over an afternoon and morning. What a treat, and my wife and I would call on her in Bologna and the other cities she is certified to guide. Truly exceptional. Chery and Trd Sachs

Artistic hub in Mantua, that deserves to be suitably explained is Palazzo Te, a suburban villa devoted to the pleasures of leisure. Architect Giulio Romano, as the heir of his great master Raphael, is called from Rome to build and decorate this Renaissance villa between 1525 and 1535, inspired by ancient Roman villas. Palazzo Te is an exemplary model of the Mannerist style as about architecture and an outstanding example of 16th century Italian painting. The name of the building derives from that of the place where it was built: the “island of Tejeto”, abbreviated as “Te”, where mantuan Lords held the ducal stables for the breeding of famous Gonzaga thoroughbred trained for battlefields and tournaments.

We were lucky enough to spend a whole day with Tiziana..kind, knowledgable and passionate about art and beautiful Italy. Mantova is a hidden gem...off the beaten track which is a surprise because it has spectacular art work and food. With two teenage boys in tow Tiziana navigated us through hundreds of years of history and art. To be honest the day was the highlight of our trip to Italy...we would not gave enjoyed it anywhere near as much if we had not had Tiziana to contextualize the history and the art. She also is a guide for a number of other cities....Bologna is just one...wish we had had her there too!

The Ducal Palace of Mantua is a complex of buildings built over a long period – from the beginnings of the 14th all the way to the 17th century. During the latter period, the main ruling family of Mantua, the Gonzaga, experienced their decline. The complex is formed by about 500 rooms and covers a surface of almost 34.000 square meters. To create the palace, the most important artists of the various eras were called by the powerful Gonzaga family with the task to increase the magnificence of their residence. The more significant names are Bartolino da Novara, who projected and directed the construction of San Giorgio Castle, as well as Antonio Pisano, known as Pisanello, who realized a famous cycle of frescoes inspired by the legend of King Arthur, Andrea Mantegna, artist of the famous Camera Picta or "Chamber of the Newlyweds", and Giulio Romano, famous for both his paintings and the scenographic project of the architectural creations.

The place is huge and very interesting. I wish I could have read all the explanations on all the items, but I would still be there today. If you like science it is a very interesting place to go and you can stay there for hours and hours to try and see everything. It ends up being a little tiring, especially if you have to walk to go to other places. We were unable to see everything because the place closed at 12 or 13 (we thought it would close later) and we were leaving the city after this attraction.

What a trip! Adam, our driver, was fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble for him. The day went according to plan and we had marvellous visits to both the extensive complex of Villa Adriana and then taken up the hill to Villa d’Este and its magnificent water gardens. Thoroughly recommend this out of Rome trip although pre-trip communication from the local provider could be improved.

Spending the day with Annarita was absolutely incredible. Her knowledge of and passion for this magnificent part of history is unmatched. We were having such a great time connecting with her that our time went by so quickly. We’ll be requesting her for future tours in the area, for sure. We’ll also be returning to the palace now that we have a better understanding of its history. Treat yourself to this very special experience!
