The 10 Best Tours in Chania Town, Crete

April 9, 2022 Kiesha Cripe

Much of the old town district of Chania was developed around its harbor, which was built by the Venetians during the 14th century. Its lighthouse still proudly overlooks the Mediterranean. Here you’ll find several cinemas and historical attractions like the Archaeological Museum, a collection of Minoan and Roman artifacts that’s housed in the former Monastery of Saint Francis. Word nerds will especially enjoy the Museum of Typography.

Come with us and discover the West of Crete! This excursion brings us to West Crete and our first stop in Chania, the most ravishing city of Crete. It was an important Minoan city and the “mother of the Cretan cities”, according to ancient writers. The city is divided in the Old City, with the gorgeous harbor and the New City, beyond its Venetian fortifications. The Old City is one of the most beautiful cities in the Mediterranean and is called “Venice of the East”. We can admire samples of all the civilizations that have passed from here: archaeological Minoan sites, Turkish minarets and mosques, Muslim neighborhoods, Venetian fortresses, dockyards, fountains, squares, arches, mansions, Loggia and the Lighthouse. We can enjoy our lunch at the picturesque harbor or visit the famous Agora (Market), which houses traditional little shops and taverns. Here we can buy souvenirs or leather goods in very good prices.

Inclusions: Professional and Multilingual speaking guide., Transfers with air-conditioned luxurious buses., Free pick up service from any place in Crete.

Exclusions: Tips and Individual expenses.

Standing on the summit is something I will remember for a very long time and I highly recommend Vangelis as the best mountain and trekking guide.

The Imbros Gorge is located in the province of Sfakia and is the second-largest gorge in Crete after Samaria. The picturesque scenery, in combination with the low difficulty of traversing it, make the descent of Imbros ideal for families wanting to expose children to the beauty of nature. There you will have some free time to take pictures or have some breakfast before you begin your hike. In a leisurely pace, the gorge can be traversed in about 2.5 hours. Behind your group, there will always be a hiking escort to ensure everyone's safety and provide assistance if needed. The gorge ends at Komitades village, from where you will depart for Sfakia, one of the most traditional Cretan villages. There you will have around 3 hours to divide between swimming in the warm Mediterranean waters and enjoying a Cretan meal in one of the local taverns. Early in the evening you will board the bus back to your original pick up points.

By far one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, Elafonissi is situated on the south west coast. A tropical effect is created by its white and pink coral sands. Head to the right for shallow water in a small enclosed lagoon ideal for the children. A walk through the lagoon to the islet is most worthwhile as you will discover this unique coastline.

It is the 2nd time i have decided to walk Samaria Gorge, the last time it was 10 years ago. I knew what i was getting myself into - just my poor friend, who i dragged along, didn't.. :) Loved it the first time, loved it the second times..so let me give you some tips from this trip. I chose this travel company and was happy to do so as they picked us up on time, lovely guide Elena was waiting for us already when we arrived. Once they collected everyone it was time to head off in the beautiful White mountains. We got a lot of useful and interesting information in the bus from Elena and we headed for our first stop for a breakfast. Here i have to say i was greatly disappointed at the selection of dry, tasteless toasts and baguettes with one slice of ham and cheese, better to buy your own breakfast in advance. Would greatly recommend to change a restaurant! But we were stocked up on food - you are going to walk 4-6 hours, so empty bottle for water and some snacks is a must. We took this time walking sticks with us that were helpful as you are walking most of the time on rocks, take at least trainers and a hat with you. You will get a time plan from your guide so to be out of the gorge just in time for a boat, as if you miss it you will stay there the night. I attached a photo of our guide Elena too who was making sure we all made it out and was kind enough to take one with me. We took a tons of photos, had a great time, met a goat in Samaria village who eat our apple leftovers, slipped one time on a straight floor - guess i am just clumsy..all in all made it out and took the bus for 2 EU to the village. There i just headed for the sea to was away the sweat and relax. It was also very nice to change my trainers for the flip flops i took with me. We eat some thing in the local restaurant and boarded the boat, on time.. :) After the nice and peaceful boat drive, everyone was tired, we boarded the bus again and headed our way home. The road back is like a roller coaster but as there is no other way the experienced driver went one mountain road up and then down..as we were in good hands, nothing to worry about.

After we pick you up in the morning from various locations around Chania, we will follow the green north coast just before Kastelli and finally reach the rock chapel of Agia Sophia through the village of Topolia. After a short visit to this incredibly interesting site, we will proceed to the main attraction of the tour! Elafonisi is located on the southwestern most point of Crete and being an oblong gives the impression of being a separate island as it seems to be divided into two parts by water. On the eastern side of the beach, in front of the lagoon, you will find umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, snack bars and changing rooms. In Elafonisi, you will have plenty of time to explore the area and swim in the crystal clear waters!

Inclusions: Pick up and Drop off with air-conditioned luxury bus from select spots in Chania, Visit to the cave of Saint Sophia, Visit to Elafonisi, Visit to local village (subject to conditions), English Speaking guide, Swedish speaking guide available every Wednesday
