When we were driving to our hotel in Maria Alm, my wife saw the fortress from the highway and mentioned it to me. We received the "Hochkonig" card, which gave us a discount to see the Hohenwerfen Castle. It was a beautiful castle where we saw a demonstration of various falcons, eagles and ospreys flying over the courtyard. We took the guided tour later and learned quite a lot about this castle. We were not disappointed in visiting.

We visited this attraction in September 2019. Breath-taking. Definitely no photos to help preserve the ice. Fitness level required to hike up to the cave entrance plus climb stairs inside the cave (700!), Postcards available in the gift shop to help you bring home photos to show your friends. Dress warmly, you ARE in a cave full of ice.

A nice and gentle 1.4k climb to one of the locations used in the Sound of Music. Start point is located in Werfen next the tourist office and the climb takes you up through the woods to the field used by film, with views of Hohenwerfen Fortress in the background.
