Murray to Mountains Rail Trail

Australia's premier rail trail offers more than 100km of scenic, sealed, off-road bike trail in North East Victoria. Starting in Wangaratta, the rail trail connects culinary villages including Milawa, Beechworth, Rutherglen, Bright and Myrtleford. Discover the diverse landscape of the High Country region - from natural bushland to open farmland, fertile valleys and some of Australia's most spectacular mountain ranges. The rail trail meanders alongside clear rivers, vineyards, hops, orchards and groves, with plentiful food, wine and craft beer experiences dotted along the way.

We chose the Wangaratta to Milawa section of the Trail as it was the flatest. We are not seasoned bike riders but this was a great path. In total we completed over 40klms return trip which was relatively easy going for us. Some lovely country side. You could also walk sections of the Trail. A really good fun activity for the whole family just pick which section and how experienced you are at riding. We will do another section some time in the future.

I drove in to look around and it was rather lovely to drive around... the roads are in good conditions inside the park...or the parts I drove were. At one point, I got out to walk around and there were some beautiful Spring flowers throughout the area. As I was leaving the area, I noticed a 4-5 foot long red-bellied black snake on the road.... it's head was raised... I was close enough to see the red along it's side and the shape of it's head. I was delighted! There is no better way to see a snake than safely from the driver's seat of your car. I had slowed down and it stopped making it's way across the road in front of the car ... it returned to the area it had come from. By the time I reached for my phone to take a photo it was on it's way well off the road.

We went to visit the info centre as we were cycle touring & wanted to get a plan for the next few weeks. Melissa spoke to us, listened & was very constructive in regards to local knowledge and services. In addition she was able to offer good advice about roads/traffic on them & access to water/supplies. Her suggestions about booking camping & other little tips was most helpful too. We did as she suggested & did some of the local walks as well. It made our Wangaratta experience even more enjoyable.
