The movie 'Lion King' was released in 1994. It garnered 2 academy awards and led to the broadway adaption later. But do you know who was the first 'Lion King' of the world - It is the 'Lord Narasimha' who is worshipped by the Hindus in India. Lord Narasimha, as the name implies, is a combination of 'Nara' and 'Simha' which means Man and Lion respectively. He is the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This Lakshmi Narasimhar temple in Poovarasankuppam was built by the ruler Narasimha Pallavar 1 in the 7th Century. This temple is also known as South Ahobilam. Other things that you might know by now - 1) 3 temples in a straight line. (Singirikudi - Poovarasankuppam - Parikkal) Imagine this sort of geospatial positioning being achieved 1000+ years ago... Truly Amazing ancient Indians. 2) Goddess Lakshmi sitting on the lap of the Lord with one eye looking towards the devotees and the other looking at the Lord. Hence, the name Lakshmi Narasimhar 3) All of the Narasimhar temples have a sacred tradition of offering free food for the devotees (Anna Dhanam). However, there were no receipts given to us, though the person noted down the name and address. I wish we had more options to donate money through Bhim UPI, Gpay, PayTM, PayPal etc in this digital age. TNHRCE - PLEASE PLEASE Wake up 4) Lord Venugopal Swamy Sannathi in the right side of the temple along with Andal Sannithi and Amirthavalli Sannithi's 5) This temple is an example of Men and Women being treated equally in India 1400 years ago. I really liked the marketing of the person who was selling flowers in front of the temple. Hats off to our unsung heroes. He very well knew that we were on our way to the next temple stop - Parikkal (remember we had the blessings of Singirikudi Narasimhar by then). He asked us to buy flowers there in Poovarasankuppam itself as the flowers would not be available in Parikkal by the time we reach there. We got a lovely wonderful Thazambu garland for the Parikkal Lord Narasimha. Please refer to the picture attached for more details of the place and the other Narasimha temples in Tamil Nadu. Jai Sri Narasimha

36 feet tall Anjaneyar deity in the temple. Fairly newly constructed. Easily accessed from Puducherry, taking the exit about 200 meters away from the toll booth on the highway to Tindivanam and driving down about 10 kms or so. Ample parking space is available. Crowded on saturdays, but quite peaceful and easy to visit during the mid week. While four faces are visible from the front, when doing the rounds of the temple, the fifth is visible from behind. Well maintained premises.

Home to the Kuruvikarar nomadic tribes of South India, the Ashakulam Village in Villupuram can be visited with the help of a local guide. You can watch villagers make the typical beads that are often sold on the beaches and in local markets.
