Vancouver was founded as “Gastown” by an Englishman with a penchant for beer and storytelling. Today Gastown is a historic section of the Canadian metropolis, and the lively pubs still reflect the area’s former status as a sort of community drinking center. The city’s forests, grand parks, and impressive suspension bridge beckon travelers to explore them, as do the city’s shops and museums. Relive the glory of the 2010 Winter Games with visits to Olympic venues and the marvelous Olympic Cauldron.

Explore traditional and contemporary art from Northwest Coast First Nations and other cultures across the world. See magnificent Indigenous carvings, weavings and contemporary artworks in a spectacular building overlooking mountains and sea. Admire the world’s largest collection of works by acclaimed Haida artist Bill Reid, including his famous cedar sculpture The Raven and the First Men. Explore the Museum’s Multiversity Galleries where more than 10,000 objects from around the world are displayed. Stroll the Museum Grounds, where monumental Haida houses, poles and Musqueam house posts capture the dramatic beauty of traditional Northwest Coast architecture and design. Enjoy a wide range of special exhibitions and public programs, including free guided gallery walks. Visit the MOA Shop and relax in Cafe MOA. MOA is situated on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people.
After visiting the Bill Reid Gallery I was told that to understand and appreciate First Nation’s history and culture I should go to the MOA. The museum is huge (and architecturally impressive) and features roughly a dozen galleries. Here, you will find totem poles, historical and contemporary Indigenous art, a 600-piece ceramics collection from the 16th-19th centuries, thousands of objects from around the world, an enormous and stunning Bill Reid sculpture housed in a former gun turret, two Haida houses, Musqueam posts and so much more. The staff is approachable and very knowledgeable, answering several questions I had. I happened to visit while a Diwali festival was taking place featuring dancing, henna painting, tea and sweets and more. There is a small cafe on the premises offering coffee/tea, soups, sandwiches, baked goods, etc. Price of admission is reasonable (adult is $17) considering the size and substance of the museum’s collection. I spent over three hours here.

**Now open by appointment** Nitobe Memorial Garden is a Japanese tea and stroll garden ranked consistently in the top 5 Japanese Gardens in North America. A place of reflection, where each step reveals a new harmony. Please book your appointment to visit: botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/admission
From the highly manicured trees and shrubs to the koi, Nitobe Garden is a tranquil spot located within the bustling UBC campus. From every perspective it's a photographers dream. The manicured trees, rolling moss and hills, Japanese lanterns and water features fill the space in harmony and filtered light. Delightful on a rainy day and empty. Enjoy the trails and peak into the Tea House. Take a moment to respect the memorial garden to Dr Nitobe, a visionary and bridge across the Pacific. Simply delightful!

UBC is one of the best places to visit in Vancouver for both tourists and locals. Just 25 minutes from downtown, the Vancouver campus is a special destination, brimming with West Coast scenery, world-class attractions and warm hospitality. Here you can lounge on a beach or cheer on a hockey game. Stroll through an ancient rainforest or wander a traditional Japanese garden. Picnic in a rose garden or dine on white linen. Start your visit at the UBC Welcome Centre and let the friendly staff help plan your perfect itinerary.
“”The Tales Of Hoffman”” opéra performance by the UBC Voice and Opera Student Programme from the School of Music demonstrated why this programme continues to be so successful.. these students provided a stellar experience for us at this Opera performed at the Old Auditorium which created a special atmosphere.. the night was electric with this UBC Student production.. Nancy Hermiston continues to provide an environment for this programme to demonstrate why it is so supported and appreciated..the audience demonstrated very strong support by their applause and standing ovation... definitely an evening to remember..

How did I miss this place? It's a gorgeous venue, ample parking, snacks and good coffee (Ethical Choice) and wines (a variety), the seats are fairly comfy for concert seating, the staff are friendly and helpful, and they offer up some incredible events. I am definitely going back to this modern, gorgeous venue with excellent acoustics.

Those trees could just chill you with their stories but you have to slow down and really look! They can say so much to those who listen. Old grown Douglas Firs and Redwoods and then there are those majestic Cedar that are so tall and straight. Some still bare the paddle marks from those cutters that have gone before. Such a magical place to reflect and wonder! Yet this place is still in the city!

I'm going to miss my yearly visit to this little paradise. I'll miss my Wreck Beach friends and my doses of nudity, that keeps my free spirit afloat. See you next time!

A must-see for students & adults with an existing love of nature, biology, conservation or evolution. With a small amount of background knowledge (1 university course or a few YouTube videos) you can enjoy this museum so much more. Makes perfect sense to have it on a university campus as its best enjoyed by people with an existing interest. That being said, it’s my favourite museum in Vancouver.
