I'm not sure which entrance we accessed this place by but it was the first access point south of Westmeath village. Grassy parking at the trail head. We went the first week of May and the causeway through the swamp was nearly submerged; in fact the water had actually risen on our return journey. Very spooky, memories of the game 'Myst'. Lots of beaver, muskrat and birds. There are no maps, arrows or trail names so we picked a direction and started walking........ and walking. We seemed to follow the river and then started curling away only to mysteriously reappear at the river against all sense of direction. We found a beach and a curious stone firepit/labyrinth, but as we had no idea how to get back out, we didn't have time to enjoy it for long as we were having to retrace our path before the sun went down. Took longer than anticipated and we were worn out by the time we got back to the car. Have no idea if this is the only trail but it is at least an hours walk to get to the beach this way. Even looking at Google earth etc we have not been able to figure out the path we took. Make sure you have some water with you in case you get lost - a compass would help, too. Sure to be a mosquito fest in the warm months. A strange, surreal landscape reminiscent of the bayou.

Horseback riding, horse-friendly campground facilities and equestrian vacations an hour West of Ottawa. We are the home of the "HORSE-CATION". Experience sunset dinner rides, dude-ranch city slicker vacations, over 40 kilometers of trail systems, special events including clinics and competition. Resort amenities include showers, pool, hot tub, beach, a restaurant and nightly entertainment. Activities include horseback riding, kayaking, white water rafting, biking, volleyball and much more.
We brought my daughter and her horse here last August for the Lindsay Partridge seminar. She got so much out of it. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and there was a lot of things to do for our 10 year old son, who's not an equestrian. We went rafting, played sports... Will definitely return next year.
