Minnesota's first iron ore mine-the Soudan Mine-opened in 1882. Operations went underground by 1892 since the ore body continued deep into the ground. The mine's value was in the special kind of ore it produced. The ore's high oxygen content was used to make high-quality steel in open-hearth furnaces. When technology changed, the ore from the mine was no longer needed. Low-cost ores of the Mesabi Range took over, and Soudan Mine closed in 1962. Today, you can travel 1/2 mile underground and ride a train car back to last area that the miners worked.
The Soudan Underground State Park was established on the Soudan Mine property after it was closed down by US Steel. The mine was closed in 1965 and was donated to the State of Minnesota. This is Minnesota’s oldest, deepest and richest iron mine. The Park is located just north of the small town of Soudan, Minnesota and is on the southern banks of Lake Vermillion. Soudan is located about 90 miles north of Duluth and about 225 miles north of downtown Minneapolis. Guided hard hat tours are offered in a mine shaft ½ mile underground. The tour groups are small so you will need to make an on-line reservation to make sure you get on a tour (as you are not allowed to go underground without a guide). Tours are offered every day from Memorial Day through September 30 and on weekends in October (no tours are offered in the winter.)
I visited this State Park with my wife on a Sunday morning in mid-October and we went on the Underground Mine Tour (this is the main attraction in the Park). The tour starts with an interesting elevator ride where the tour guide has to communicate to the manual elevator operator who sits in a building next to the Visitor Center. Information is communicated to the operator using some type of Morse code and he uses this information to stop the elevator on the correct level of the mine. The guide gives a little history on the mine and lets us know why it went bankrupt even though there is still iron ore in this site. After that you hop on an old iron ore mining train and tour a single floor of the mine. This tour appears to be perfectly safe and I felt safe and comfortable the entire time. After the tour we walked around and looked at one of the small aboveground open pit mines that were used when the mine first opened (but they switched to underground mining after numerous miners were injured by falling rocks).
Overall I really enjoyed visiting this State Park and think it is one of the best Parks in the entire State of Minnesota. I recommend that you make a reservation and tour this Park and go on the mine tour.

This fascinating tour of rural Finnish structures starts by meeting a local guide at a small Visitor Center located at the intersection of County Highway 21 and State Highway 135, Embarrass MN. (Reserve your tour in advance, seasonally only at 1 pm Thursday, Friday, and Saturday by calling the Embarrass Town Clerk's Office Monday through Thursday at 218-984-2084.)
We, a party of four seniors, were most fortunate that our guide was Mr. Michael Sola, a longtime resident of the area, and one of proud Finnish heritage. He was most knowledgeable and a very entertaining story teller.
Mr. Sola and his truck led us (as we followed behind in our car) to several locations, including a historic church, built in 1906, and four homesteads, built from the 1890s to around 1915. To one extent or another, these log homesteads are being restored and some can actually be entered. Several buildings are hauntingly beautiful. For those interested in log structures, the homes, barns, and other out-buildings display a mini-history themselves of notch-cornered construction techniques.
The Seitaniemi homestead, which Mr. Salo termed the "piece de resistance" of the tour, is a 90-foot-long building consisting of a home, hay barn, and animal barn, all conjoined and under a single three-peaked roof. It is thought to be the only still-standing structure of its kind in the country. Be sure to bring your camera!
At each homestead, Mr. Salo is happy to show you the rustic sauna that was a must-have at each farm. Were there saunas at every Finnish homestead in the area, we asked? "If there was a sauna at a farm, a Finn lived there; if a farm didn't have a sauna, a Finn didn't live there," explained Mr. Salo definitively.
This thoroughly enjoyable tour, in our view, rivals any other attraction in the area, including those in nearby Ely, Tower, and Soudan. (This region is rich in not only recreational offerings, but also, perhaps surprisingly, in cultural and historical sites as well.) The forested drive to Embarrass from any of the more commonly visited towns in the area is quite pretty. The tour is of remarkable good value both in terms of what you learn but also in terms of cost--$6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and free for children under 12. Quite a bargain to relish hidden treasures such as these historic homesteads.

This little park on the side of the road as you drive into Tower offers some old trains for the enthusiasts, a small museum in an old Depot and a playground. It looks like a great place to let the kids out of the car and blow off some steam.

In addition, all carts at The Wilderness come equipped with a GPS system designed to maintain a sufficient pace of play and enhance the experience of those playing the course for the first time.
My wife and I played on a Sunday in mid September. We arrived and were greeted by a couple nice folks at the bag drop who took out bags and loaded them on a cart. We were directed to the pro shop to pay. Very nice restaurant and pro shop with a great selection of merchandise. We were checked in quickly and friendly and directed to the driving range.
The driving range is in great shape and give an opportunity to warm up with unlimited range balls. The practice putting green and large and the greens run fast. We were able to get out 20 minutes early due to a no show and were paired up with a very nice father and son.
The course was in great shape with the fairways, sand traps and greens all in good shape. The recently aerated fairways which is to be expected in the fall. The beverage cart came around 3 times each 9.
AT the turn they had a grill serving hot dogs, bratwurst and hamburgers. We had hot dogs and they were large and very good... including a bag of chips and a can of soda for $8 seemed pretty reasonable.
The Wilderness is a high-end resort course at the Fortune Bay Casino and it is not inexpensive. They do provide top notch service and the course is in great shape.

This is such a fun place for the whole family. It is a great mini golf course that features golf holes that are unique to the area. It is spotlessly clean and very well maintained. They also advertise mosquito free golf, which is true! Not one bite the whole time we were there! They have an ice cream shop with indoor tables. We will definitley be back!

The park's namesake 674-acre lake is a prime spot for eyeing wildlife.
Would give the place 5 stars but the place was very busy with campers. This is what to expect though at peak tourist season. Very beautiful park!!

We stopped for dinner last night and ordered the hand breaded pollack. Our plates were delivered to us piled high with two enormous filets, fries, garlic toast and coleslaw, lemon and tartar sauce. The batter was light and crispy, the fish flaky and delicious. When I asked for more tartar sauce it was delivered promptly. The waiter checked back several times to make sure we had what we needed and the cook stopped once to make sure our meal was to our liking. All this for $10.50 apiece! I highly recommend Good Ol' Days!

We were rather nervous for our 3-day adventure to begin - but our guide, Heather, and the WONDERFUL dogs made everything (yes, everything!) fantastic. The moment we headed out, our world was suddenly better. The dogs are so well trained (and delightfully sweet), our guide so knowledgeable (and nonjudgmental, ha!), and the views? Well, the scenery is flat-out spectacular. The yurt was a comfortable adventure and the meals delicious! Can you believe we stopped for lunch on a lake? We did - Heather built a fire and roasted delicious sausages! Overall we HIGHLY recommend White Wilderness - even if it's just to understand what, "Enjoy the silence!" really means.
