Toluca is famous for Los Portales, a monumental set of arches completed in the 19th century. It is also known for its cathedral, which is an excellent architectural representation of the Neo-Classical style.

For just $10MX you can gain access to an oasis in the industrial city of Toluca. A massive stained glass artwork depicting the struggle between dark and light within humankind wraps around the entire building, which is a repurposed market space. Visit late in the afternoon, from 4-6, to appreciate the long golden rays of sunset beaming through the stained glass. The Gardens are also well-maintained and very refreshing after being in a city. There is a big herb garden which I particularly enjoyed touching and smelling. Highly, highly recommend taking an hour to visit.

I always visit the cathedrals whenever possible. Especially in Mexico. So much history is attached to them.
I also visit them for their richness. And the San Jose de Toluca Catedral (San Jose de Nazareth) is a very good example of this. Wood, gold and stained glass abound.
Both exterior and interior are magnificent. And it feels special to walk in it.

Museo de la Acuarela

This museum is in an old home fronting a lovely park set among mature fresnos (ash trees). The fairly small rooms are usually focused on a single Mexican watercolorist, with information about the artist, and a padded bench to sit upon while appreciating his/her works. Natural light from the large old windows is augmented by lighting which goes on as one enters the room. This museum is one of seven within walking distance of each other, near the center of the city, which are included in the "Ruta del Arte" brochure available at our hotel. Of course we are familiar with watercolor in general, but this was a delightful introduction to Mexican watercolors.

We visited last year but I just got around to writing my review. We went there on a Monday around noon and we were the only visitors there which gave us a chance to really enjoy our visit and no lines. We have been to some of the the major archeological sites in Mexico (Chichen-Itza, Teotihuacan and Cholula) but I liked this one better in particular the circular pyramid which used to be an Observatory. The site itself is very small but there is a different vibe to it. You can do it a half a day excursion if you stop and walk around the little town for a bit or refreshments.

This is also called Plaza Civica. It is named martires because in this plaza, 100 indigenes were gunned down. This was in 1811 during the war for the independence of Mexico from Spain.
It is usually very large with Fountains and statues but when we were there, the display of the Sistine Chapel took most of the space. This was the reason for our visit to Toluca.
This is an exact replica, in form and content, of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. It will tour all of Mexico in order that thousands of Mexicans can admire Michelangelo’s work, created 500 years ago and that will allow the public of all ages to get close to one of the masterworks of all time. The technology has enabled to reproduce, through three million photos, each centimeter of Michelangelo’s great work, whose color-schemes were compared to the original in order to offer a unique experience to the public.
Unfortunately, you cannot take photos.
It is directly in front of the Cathedral San Jose de Toluca.
This is the centre of Toluca, with museums, restaurants and government buildings. It is also where the famous Toluca portals start.
Right in front, you can take the bus tour of the city.

If you have a chance to go to a Toluca Liga MX home game, by all means do it. This stadium is a fabulous experience: modern, perfectly designed for fútbol, loud, energetic, great food options, super sightlines, urban setting (you can walk from Centro Histórico) and a very active scene (food, souvenirs, etc.) around the stadium. Make sure you exit on the south side (Constituyentes) and then walk down 23 de Septiembre. I wish Morelia had such an amazing stadium.
