Some of the animals here aren't shown anywhere else in Japan, like the dugong. There were many unusual animals, such as adorable little garden eels, and outside there was even a "petting" area with fish that clearly loved the attention!

We visited Mikimoto Pearl Island while on a cruise with Princess Cruises. My wife just loves pearls so this was a "Must See" for us. If you have ever had a question how pearls were developed then you will get the answer here. The 3 Female divers gave us an example of there skills, the museum and staff were very informative and there were a couple of unique photo shoot areas. Over all a great experience, The Pearl Shop was just out of this world with an extensive rang of pearls which were way out of my price range but it did not cost a lot to look!!

The Toba Sea-Folk Museum was founded in 1971 to preserve the knowledge and history of Toba's fishing traditions and culture. We are the only museum in Japan dedicated to understanding the traditions of Toba's fisher-folk and the relationship between man and the sea. For over 45 years the museum has collected and preserved the antique fishing equipment of Mie Prefecture's fishing villages, and researched the traditions and religion of the area's fisher-folk.In 1985 the museum was presented with an award by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs('important Tangible Cultural Properties') for our collection of 6,879 exhibits about Toba's ancient fishing traditions and antique fishing equipment.
