The cathedral was built in late baroque and classical styles in 1765. There are 7 altars in the church, 2 of them is central. In the cryptus of the cathedral there have been buried 3 bishops of Telsiai: Justinas Staugaitis, Vincentas Borisevicius, and Pranciskus Ramanauskas.

The only existing cubist style sacred architecture building can be found in Telšiai city. The church had originally been built in the 19th century in a very different place, but because at the time it was built due to the demolition of a Catholic church and graveyard, during the period of Lithuanian Independence the Russian orthodox community received compensation to relocate to another building.
In 18th century Telsiai district was probably best known for its Yeshiva – a Jewish religious centre, which attracted students from England, United States, Uruguay, South Africa, Hungary and other countries. At that time Telsiai Yeshiva was probably the most important rabbi academy in the whole world.
Rainiai Massacre took place on the night from 24th to 25th June 1941 executed by Soviet troops in which 76 political prisoners from Telsiai prison were killed. The soldiers transported the prisoners from the prison in the dead of night, brutally tortured and executed them without any charges. When commemorating the 50-year anniversary of the massacre, a new chapel was consecrated in Rainiai.
