The Museum of Tautavel European Center of Prehistory is a complex built around the "Homme de Tautavel". It presents the history of humanity in Europe since the first Europeans to the gates of history by taking examples from the nearby area of Tautavel. The Museum of Tautavel is as renowned for the richness of his collections as for his cultural and recreational activities that allow visitors throughout the year to capture the lives of their ancestors.
Whilst researching Tautavel Man, we somehow missed the museum and drove straight to the area of the archaeological dig. After scaling a somewhat treacherous hill to get there, we were meet by some thoroughly confused archaeologists in the middle of further excavation. They were shocked to see us and wondered where or guide was, then sadly were unable to allow us further inside the cave due to an apparent change by local government for visitor safety. The was happy to provide some information and we got a little look at the caves where the bones of Tautauvel man were found. It was a fascinating experience and a great mistake to have made. We then visited the museum on the way back for a closer look at the bones and other relics found. I would have been very disappointed had that been all we had seen. If it's possible to get a guide to the dig site I would highly recommend it, however full mobility will be required to make the climb.
Between sky, land and sea, valleys that impress with their exceptional landscapes. In the extreme south of this France, which ends at the edge of Spain and which flows into the Mediterranean, is a territory of contrasts with an excessive climate: Tautavel. This is where we grow and vinify our grapes. Come discover and taste the organeleptic richness of our wines.
