When It's Dark, I See the Lights! I relocated from Brazil to Alaska in 2001 and have been chasing and photographing Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) ever since. I never heard about the Northern Lights before I moved to Alaska. The first time I saw them it was love at first sight. That was it! From there on I knew what I wanted to do, I wanted to share the Auroras with the world and show them to everyone who doesn't have the opportunity to see the Northern lights. That's what I have been doing since. From long and cold nights photographing amazing auroras through the skies, and teaching northern lights photography workshops, to the summers explaining and showing the auroras to the ones that are not able to visit Alaska in the winters. I am a photographer in Alaska, living the dream life of many photographers. Many of my images were published by NASA, Space Weather Live, Washington Post, space.com, Nature Photographer Magazine, Society of Nature Photographers, just to name a few.
Like most of Talkeetna, the shop is plain and unassuming on the outside. The photos inside and a hidden gem. Dora has taken some of the most beautiful photos on the aurora, all with other interesting subjects in the picture. A float plane, an old truck, a mountain, or a tree all add to the incredible shapes and colors of the aurora displayed behind or above them. The metal prints are beautiful, but the photo versions are equally lovely.

The "little red schoolhouse" has returned to it's former glory and is now the "little WHITE schoolhouse" once again. Absolutely worth a visit for anyone looking to get off the tourist track and learn a little more about the history of this quirky little town, gold mining, the railroad, Denali and aviation.

Stop by our brewery's tasting room to enjoy our craft beer, cider, mead, spirits, and ready-to-drink cocktails (available for here or to-go). While you're here, peruse our wide selection of apparel and participate in one of our Behind the Scenes tours. Visit our website to check out our summer tour and food truck schedules.
A group of 10 of us touring Alaska were lucky enough to be able to sit outside and enjoy some great beers and great food. A large selection of beers. Everyone tried something different. I was disappointed I did not try any of their meades. I ordered The Bachelor, a large slice of reindeer meatloaf served with mashed potatoes and peppercorn gravy. Simply delicious! Everyone enjoyed their food on a beautiful day.

This shop and gallery has a very good variety of Alaskan-made items, and the pricing was good. We enjoyed our time browsing and purchased quite a few things to take back home as gifts!

This lake is the best kept secret in Talkeetna. We rented a canoe from the Kahiltna Bistro for $25 and it was one of our favorite things that we did on our entire trip to Alaska. If you get lucky with the weather it is pretty unforgettable. At first we had a little trouble finding the park (we drove past it first because the person who rented us the canoe didn't really know how to direct us there), but once we were re-directed by a kind local we pulled in to the parking lot and paid the $5 use fee. When we arrived, we had the entire lake (XY Lake) to ourselves for a while and it was sublime. Incredibly beautiful and peaceful. If you canoe out away from the dock and to the left side of the lake (around the bend) there is a stunning view of Denali on a clear day. We paddled around the lake for hours, exploring little coves and islands on the lake, admiring the peaceful and quiet setting, feeling like the only people around. We pulled up onto the shore and jumped in the water to cool off and it was a good swim! Chilly water, but very refreshing. We didn't get a chance to hike the trails surrounding the lakes, but we saw a few hikers making the loop as we paddled around and it looked like a nice walk. This was a wonderful break from the crowded and touristy riverbank near downtown Talkeetna and gave us a much better feel for the raw and pristine landscape of the surrounding area. It was positively dreamy! If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path spot to enjoy the peacefulness of the Alaskan landscape, I highly recommend this place.

This is a great little historic general store in the center of Talkeetna. They have snacks and groceries.
