Charles D Owen Park

In addition to the baseball, basketball and play areas here, you can also fish and hike. I am constantly looking for flat hikes along rivers or streams and this is a great one. The trail begins at the rear of the lake and follows the Swannanoa River for several miles, I walked about 2 in and back. The river was shallow (less than 6 in of water) when I was there in 9/16. It is wadable and there are many points to access the river as the path is very close to the river itself. Along the way, you will pass near a working farm with cows grazing in the flowered fields as well as some out buildings from Warren Wilson College. At times distant traffic can be heard, but the majority of the hike is quiet and private. This is a very flat earthen trail and easy to follow with just a few roots here and there. Along the way there is a beautiful bamboo stand, views of flowered pastures and more grazing cows. If you want a leisurely absolutely flat hike this is the place. The park also has shaded tables to sit and enjoy a meal after your walk.

My husband and I visited Biltmore Estate specifically to see their annual Spring tulip display and we were not disappointed!!! In the first week of March, all the tulips were in various stages of showing their beautiful buds and colors. We parked near the tulip garden so before leaving we checked out the gift shop there...the Gardener's Cottage. They have wonderful gift items as well as all sorts of garden items for your home.

Grovewood Village

Experience Asheville's historic arts and crafts destination. Located adjacent to The Omni Grove Park Inn, this site once housed the weaving and woodworking operations of Biltmore Industries, an Arts and Crafts enterprise founded by Edith Vanderbilt and two inspired teachers, Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale. Today, the 11-acre property - listed on the National Register of Historic Places - is home to Grovewood Gallery, working artist studios, Golden Fleece restaurant, the Biltmore Industries Homespun Museum, and Asheville's only antique car museum. PLEASE NOTE: Our 2 museums are closed during the winter months of January - March. Grovewood Gallery and Golden Fleece restaurant are open year-round. Grovewood Village has no admission fees, and free parking is available on-site.

We went here specifically for the antique auto museum; my husband is a car aficionado. We were there during the holiday week so long line to get into the Grove Park Inn complex. Once you're in it's easy to park and enjoy the Grovewood Village. We enjoyed a glass of wine at the restaurant and a few of the outdoor sculptures. The star is the museum! The docent greeted us and gave us a brief history and even photographed our pack of 3 schnauzers! Then we were on our own to enjoy the VERY impressive display.

Lonesome Dove Riding Stables

Reviewed By susanpkent - Indianapolis, Indiana

I took my 11 year old daughter and her friend to Lonesome Dove while vacationing in a cabin nearby. The older kids all went ziplining, but the little girls were too little to go. Horseback riding was supposed to be the consolation prize, but it ended up being THE BEST! The staff was friendly the moment we arrived. They talked to the girls and helped them get comfortable to ride. The horses were well cared for and well mannered. We rode for two hours, which was the perfect amount of time. The trail was breathtaking, and the horses weren't nose to tail and stubborn (which is what I was expecting based on other rides we had done in other places). These horses were calm, spread out just enough, and took commands well. The girls felt like they were really riding, not just sitting on top of a horse that was going through the motions. If you are in the area, I HIGHLY recommend Lonesome Dove. You won't be disappointed :)

I visited the Chamber of Commerce looking for advice about local hiking. My travel companion and I visited the visitors center to ask for the local trails and to inquire about restaurants. The woman sitting behind the desk when we visted was not at all enthusiastic or helpful. We felt like we were interrupting her morning routine....we tried to ask for directions and she wasn't specific or helpful. We had questions about the hiking map due to the fact that the print was too small for us to read (even with our glasses) and she replied "it's all there". We then asked about area restaurants and she handed us a generic map......all in all, it felt like she is not very enthusiastic about helping travelers.

This glass blowing studio is a cool place to check out while in Asheville! It was awesome to watch the glass blowers work and create. There are so many beautiful pieces on display that are for sale and the employee working at the studio / main desk was very informative and friendly. They do not have a parking lot to park in, but there is affordable public parking near by. Definitely worth the stop!

A quick tour of a small and diverse property by the super knowledgeable owner, Van, is worth every penny! He proudly showed off the ways he is diversified his work in collaboration with various universities through grants to support his small operation. Learned all about how hops are grown, very time consuming! He sells to a local Black Mountain brewery--would love to try his beer. Plus he has an area of blue berries. We learned all about the life cycle and migration of the Monarch butterfly and got to visit inside his Butterfly House--think a tiny version of Butterfly World. And... learned about solar panels and saw chickens---a neat experience for a pair of true city slickers. Van was proud and knowledgeable, and very patient with an question-filled first grader who was a part of our tour.
