Our founders, the Thompsons, connected over a mutual love of animals, and thereafter discovered an unknown breed of horse, developed by British Gypsies, while traveling through the English countryside. After a four-year journey to understand these horses and the culture that created them, we took part in naming them: the Gypsy Vanner horse. The Gypsy Gold Farm is home to the first 16 registered horses of a breed that's now 5,000 animals strong. Our 40 acre ranch is an educational and cultural oasis, where visitors to Central Florida learn about one of the most colorful and least understood societies on earth and the magical Vanner Horses they envisioned.
A beautiful horse farm. We were greeted when we parked. We had access to all areas of the farm. The intro lecture was very informative and he kept your attention. He went thru the whole history on this breed of horse coming to the U.S. After the lecture, he took us around to each penned area that had horses and explained the horses in detail. We also went to the mountain ( high ground) where all the horses that passed was buried. He described each by name and a little about each horse. I would take other family members back to the farm.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time here if you want want to look around! There are a ton of vendors, all of whom seemed very friendly. This place is huge and I had a bit of trouble navigating my way around. I was most impressed by the produce area. The fruits and vegetables were fresh, delicious and so reasonably priced. Many of the vendors also offered samples of their produce.

Location: 5 miles north of the Villages, Access to their many pluses but away from their minuses. Either coast , Gainesville and Orlando an hour to 1:15 away.
Climate; A few frosts a year but the number is declining. Rain concentrated in summer. Cool early mornings, tee shirt weather 10-4 much of Nov.-April. Summers a minus, hot and humid.
Size: 3200 homes., to me about perfect.
Activities: Good golf courses, great Tennis and Pickleball , Pools and fitness center. Nicest softball field in the areaThe community is sports oriented.
Rental: 3 month, typically Jan.-Mar. generally unavailable. Some 4 month homes available.
Overall: A great place to winter or live.

Lake Weir recreation and Conservation Area attracts boaters, home owners and bird watchers to the unique Marion County venue. Hunting is not allowed in the conservation area of Lake Weir because of the blend of homes and recreation opportunities.
Fine dining opportunity at Eatons Beach as well as casual Sand Bar refreshment and food offerings at Gator Joe's water side resturant are a great way to experience the Carney Island experience.

Beautiful facility with room after room of war memorabilia, documents, pictures of war related events, plus a memorial to Ike in the form of personal effects, pictures, etc. Problem is that there is no commentary or explanation of what is on display - usually just a small plaque naming the donor of the display. Too bad - if you were not a WWII vet, it would be difficult to place the contents of the memorial in context.

The food is excellently prepared and reasonably priced. The service is excellent. It's a great place to go for a quiet, reasonably priced lunch. However, the dinner menu is a bit pricy.

There are 3 large squares that form the entertainment and restaurant hubs of the Villages. Each is excellent for what they have to offer: numerous restaurants, shops, movie theatre, etc. Live entertainment is offered from 5-9 PM every night of the week and it is free of charge. Happy hour prices on drinks is offered from 5-6 PM with very reasonable prices offered throughout the night. We prefer this Square because of the variety of restaurants that we like and because it is where our favorite hotel in the Villages, Waterfront Inn, is located. As the name implies there is a large lake in the square with great views of water birds, people in dragon boats, golf courses, etc. Many of the restaurants offer outdoor seating with views of this lake or the entertainment venue.

We were looking for a flea market close to the Villages (about 8 miles) and were told about The Market of Marion. It's pretty big and most of it is under cover....lots of what seemed like permanent dealers selling newer items. We were interested in used items and finally found them in the last few "wings." (There appears to be a centre aisle with wings coming off of the one side.) No one we asked seemed to be able to direct us to the used flea market area so we did some unnecessary walking through lots of new items. If you go and are interested like us in the older, yard sale items, don't park as you enter the grounds. Drive towards the very back where those wings are found. The day we went there were lots of plants in that area so you may want to look for them. We found a few small items....parking is free.

Eagle Ridge is a 36 hole complex located within the Del Webb community of Spruce Creek. Although it is private they do accommodate the public. It consists of 4 nine hole courses known as The Champions, Masters, Heritage and Memorial courses. Regardless of what routing they allow you to play it’s always an enjoyable round. The layout is reasonably open allowing for errant recovery shots. There is some challenging water holes and fun risk reward par fours. I’ve had the opportunity to play it a number of times and it’s usually in good condition. This time around, the greens were beat. It’s apparent in a number of the local courses this year, possibly too much rain. Just a side tip, don’t leave open food, snacks or crackers unattended while you’re hitting. The local squirrels that inhabit the place must have been fed previously. They have no fear of humans are bold and will follow you and wait till you leave the cart then grab what they can. Crackers are nothing, be mindful of your keys or favorite sunglasses.

Tom and I have picked thorn less black berries at Back Road Berries a few years in a row...huge, tasty, black berries...easy picking and NO thorns!
This 'winter' we have picked beautiful, juicy strawberries too...once in December & once in January. We are originally from Northern MN so picking strawberries this time of year is a treat and given us 'bragging rights' to our friends and relatives who are still in Northern MN where it is quite 'chilly' to say the least!
Back Road Berries has strawberries, blue berries and blackberries at various times in the year. Check their web-site backroadberries.com
Oh my...luscious berries to eat and make jam with...a bit of Florida sunshine on your toast.
