OnAgain OffAgain Farm, home to a herd of award winning alpacas, encourages farm visits by appointment only. The farm's unique location in the middle of a housing development on Spartanburg's eastside, allows visitors a close up view of farm life in a suburban environment. Alpacas are offered for sale. In addition, we offer a variety of alpaca products, produced by our alpacas, ranging from raw fleece to dryer balls to yarn and many products in between. The alpacas also provide a never ending supply of "paca poo" for your gardening needs. The soil enhancing "beans" produced by the alpacas can go right on your plants without worries of it burning the plants. "Ahh Poo" is offered for sale pre-bagged, by the pick up load, or by the ever popular "scoop your own poop." While there is no charge for a visit, the alpacas do benefit from an optional donation.

I found this trail in 1978. My first apartment was through the woods...a forgotten and now long gone place called Crystal Springs. I was a college freshman living on peanuts( if I was lucky). A friend told me about Cottonwood and it was easy to find, as it abuts the high school fields, by the river. From the wacky days of youth, into the days of fatherhood...this trail is a staple of freedom, exercise, nature loving and tranquility my babies are growing into men knowing and loving. The long blond hair is short and mostly gray now, but the trail beckons my name. The mountain bike zips through and serenity overcomes the real world burdens...if only briefly. I walk this lady in weather cold and hot, and every climate in between, and always leave a better man. Pack a backpack with picnic supplies and walk this amazing trail from end to end and back again. It’s never the same twice. Make memories like my children and I did, and still do. You cannot find a better walking trail in this county. I often feel like I should pay for an attraction like this...it’s that good. The heck with 5 stars...this place gets 50 stars.

I first found out about this place back in the fall when we did the haunted trolley tour. The tour company is actually authorized to take guest in at night. And this place is said to be somewhere you stay out of at night! So on our weekly mom and son walk..I decided to head out and take my fur son and head to Oakwood Cemetery and see what we could find. We drive though the ornate gates and drive around looking for a place to park. We found a small parking area and first just go out looking. Now this is the oldest cemetery in Spartanburg dating back from the 1885. It has about 26 acres and around 5000 to 6000 markers. Lots of people who are important to the history of Spartanburg and many military heroes are here. Included in the long buried are names such as Confederate Col Joseph Walker, WW1 Medal oh Honor recipient John Belton White, author David Duncan Wallace, and nearby Converse college founder Dexter Edgar Converse. Shadow and I walk around noticing some of the beautiful and unique head stones. Some made to look like a tree one even looks like a wheel. Everything here is well taken care of and is a pleasant place to stroll..if you are into strolling in cemeteries (we are).On this day it seemed to be a popular place to bring dogs to walk as we passed several other dogs and their pet parents. So after about an hour of meandering and taking photos..we decided to stop here for my real reason I am here. The section known as Hells Gate!!! OK, so in addition to being the oldest cemetery around..it is also reported to be one of the most haunted places around too!!! There isn't actually a sign directing you to the place. So I went on Youtube and found what I was looking for. Oakwood Cemetery as I have stated is quite lovely. Lush green lawns and flowers with decorated headstones. After all this used to be THE place to be buried. But you will see an area which is coming soon which is a memorial gardens. And right next to the you spot a plot of land that seems different. Just from a quick look you will not see any grand headstone and things here seem to be quite dead compared to everything else. See this part of the posh cemetery was the potters field. This was the place where they threw in..not really buried..inmates, wards of the state, and people who could not afford to be buried. In 1914 another odd thing happened. The city dug up a bunch of graves and moved them here. And well, if you have seen horror movies you know that doesn't sit well with the departed. This is the place of several satanic rituals and graves have been vandalized. It is even said to be a portal to hell!! So don't know all about that but here is what we experienced. We parked and when you walk in the area I just feel a lot of sadness in this area And a very heavy feeling. You notice simple handmade grave markers. Many of the markers have been kicked over. When we got back to our car I noticed fingerprints on the rear window and I had just cleaned my car. My car acted like it didn't want to start for a second (it hasn't done that since then) and my phone which was on 99% when we got to this section was now on 33%! This place is open dawn to dusk. There is no admission charge and there are several parking area. It really is a beautiful place to just walk around. Food and bathrooms are close by. Just please be respectful of this place and those who are buried here. If you bring your dog, please clean up after them. Now should you want to visit at night..then wait until October and join the awesome folks over at Main Street Trolley for a haunted tour that includes a stop here. We did it this past October and it was wickedly fun.

Many years ago, I would observe Harold Hatcher in his 90’s working long hours in this former gully. It is amazing to now recognize his vision was so far ahead of what seemed possible at that time. Walk these grounds and feel the spirit of a humble and altruistic man, whose vision is now the number one free attraction in Spartanburg County. There is something magical about this sanctuary in the city. Do yourself a favor travelers...get off the highway, grab a sandwich at Arby’s and enjoy a peaceful break in the gazebo. Then, stretch your legs on the paved trails and listen to the songbirds. Be kind...drop a little something in the donation box and write something kind in the guest ledger. When you head back to the highway...you will be a different driver. Relaxed, calm and revitalized. Why can I only go 5 stars? Let’s give the place 10 and call it a day.
