Windram Art has a range of art, mainly depicting the Australian outback. Notable among the paintings are the gigantic boab trees from the Kimberley in the north of Western Australia (WA). The colors are pleasingly matched. The size of the paintings ranges from large oils to postcards that can be posted home easily. There are a variety of other art works, including indigenous art. Windram Art is not a large gallery, but it would repay a trip for anyone interested in Australian art. The gallery is a short drive from the city on Mill Point Road, South Perth.

Open Fridays 10-4, Saturday, Sunday 1 - 4pm Original artworks by May Gibbs, creator of the iconic Gum-Nut Babies and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie with items of local history are exhibited in this distinctive 1904 building restored as an Art Museum and Gallery. From 1889 May Gibbs lived in a charming home across the road from this building, part of a unique group of five heritage buildings.
The South Perth Historical Society is housed in a handsome colonial era red brick building. Displays change regularly -- when I visited, it was an exhibition devoted to May Gibbs, who is best known for her Gumnut Babies. The museum is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Fridays and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry is gratis. The museum is on the corner of Mends St and Mill Point Road. Parking is usually available nearby.

The Swan River Colony was founded in 1829. The mill in South Perth was established in 1835, and functioned until 1859, milling prodigious quantities of grain throughout its lifetime. Without the mill, the struggling infant colony would not have survived. Perth, now a thriving city of 2 million, can take pride in this link to the pioneering settlement of Western Australia. After two years' of restoration, the Old Mill has reopened. The oldest surviving connection to Perth's early days is a source of pride to the people of South Perth. The restored mill and the miller's cottage are are on the tip of the South Perth peninsula. They can be accessed by car; the bus stops outside the door.

Sir James Mitchell, better known as Jimmy Mitchell, was Premier of Western Australia. He was well-liked by the people of WA, and he has lent his name to this popular riverside park. There's a cafe if you want to get something to eat or drink. The Park is a popular place to watch the New Year's Eve fireworks. It's a good place to wander around, it would be very hard to get lost. You can see the city of Perth, known locally as "Little Manhattan," reflected in the water.

The face lift the City of South Perth has done is fantastic. The new mends street jetty area is extremely family friendly. Check out the Emu and Meerkat statues, sit, relax and enjoy the river and city views or grab a coffee, drink or meal at one of the great restaurants nearby. Miss Chow’s is my favourite.

As many grandparents will be aware - it's the school holidays when we all try to think up treats for our grandchildren. We took ours to the zoo yesterday and it proved to be a day we all enjoyed. The zoo was full of children having fun exploring the various areas with the African Savannah, the Asian Rainforest, the Nocturnal House and the penguins particular favourites. The playground was also very popular and after they had a ride on the heritage carousel we all left happy. The facilities at the zoo are constantly being upgraded and it's both an educational and fun place for a day out for the whole family.

Windsor Park is a large park next to Perth Zoo. The park is dog-friendly, but dog walkers must pick up after their pooches. The City of South Perth provides bags for collecting the droppings, just look for the dispenser. The central grassy lawn is large enough for Fido to have a good run. Windsor Park is close to the Mends St shopping area, and adjoins the entrance to Perth Zoo. The park also has toilets for park users. The park is near the corner of Mends St and Mill Point Rd, it's easy to find.
