We left Sapporo around 8:00, drove past Otaru, and arrived at Nioka Whiskey Yoichi Distillery, which was another story. And then we continued to drive along beautiful, sometimes even breathtaking, seashores around the peninsula, which was disturbed with some long tunnels, though. We had lunch at Fuji Zushi, continued on driving to Shimamu Beach, which had another story to tell, and then to Cape Kamui. After the cape, we continued to drive along the Sea of Japan. When we got to Michi-no-eki Osukoi Kamoenai, it was tea time. That was the end of the breathtaking beauty of the strangely shaped rocks and the sea water of Shakotan blue. We were driving back to Sapporo, and, when we reached Otaru, it was almost supper time. We decided to drop on at Otaru, did some shopping and had supper at a branch shop of Fuji Zushi (again!). We enjoyed a full day trip in Hokkaido, although we had to drive in dusk through unfamiliar Sapporo streets.

This is a beautiful place for hiking. There are many steps and in places, the trail is quite steep. If you are afraid of heights, you might not want to visit this area. But, this is a beautiful place in Japan. The trail is at the top of high hills and in most places it is only about 2 to3 feet wide. We walked all the way to the end and were treated to some amazing views of the peninsula and the ocean. There is a little place to eat and a gift shop at the beginning of the hike, near the parking lot. There is an unmanned lighthouse at the end but it wasn't open the day we were there.

This is probably missed by most people on the way to Cape Shakotan. It's however just a short walk from the Shakotan tourist centre. It is a hilly trail and a pretty short walk, till you reach a 2 storey wooden observation tower. Take in the sea views and relax here.

What an Outdoor Onsen!!! As rivers&creeks says the outdoor first appearance doesn't feel like an excellent onsen, just the parking lot & modern building. Only one person was there when we went in so I don't think they were serving any light foods. But we had timed it to be for the sunset at 5:40. Everything was clean and really quiet. Indoor was a jacuzzi bubble bath and another bath. Stepping outside begins the magic. There were 6 or 7 ladies, all perched on different rocks or soaking in the hot spring waters. There was a soft silence, not like we must be quiet but more like we were all sharing this perfect moment. Two schoolgirls came in and softly mumbling over the sound of the waves, you could tell they were local and came often. The sun made a glittering path across the ocean, shimmering, making a perfect angle with the Shakotan Pennisula while we breathed in the fresh sea air. Slowly the sun sank into the skyline in an explosion of glorious colors. We had all experienced one of nature's most spectacular moments. Good English website.
