Sasayama is a city in the central eastern part of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.
The modern city of Sasayama was established on April 1, 1999, from the merger of the former town of Sasayama, absorbing the towns of Konda, Nishiki and Tannan.

Sasayama castle is long gone, though the walls remain. There is an informative little centre on the site of where the castle was, with a short, English subbed video outlining its place in history. Some of the other displays would be more interesting if they also had English explanations. The grounds outside are nice for a walk, and there are some cool symbols carved into the rock walls that date to the castle's construction.
For history buffs it might be a nice little side-trip, but maybe not worth organising a trip around.
There is a street of merchant houses nearby too, with a house preserved as a museum. Quite interesting, especially along with the castle.

I can't read Kanji, but I think this page is the area near Sasayama castle. Within a few hundred metres or so of the castle there are lots of old Edo-era buildings in quiet little side streets arranged around the castle moat. There are a few low key museums too (none with much information in English that I found), but a general wander around in the street is fun by itself and very relaxing. I also visited the Kawaramachi district just South East of the castle. There is a nice old shopping street there with interesting old restaurants and a few tasteful shops for tourists. It didn't seem too busy, and it wasn't at all cheesy and there were plenty of local residents going around their daily business. In general, a nice bit of traditional Japan, and worth a day trip out from the big cities to see something different.
Although I didn't try it, there seemed to be people on rental bicycles. The streets are flat and pretty quiet so that would be a great way to get around.

The museum is on a hillside looking across a valley at a mountain, at the foot of which are dozens of potteries making Tambayaki. There are three floors of ceramic galleries and a restaurant serving the best food of our first three weeks in Japan. A nearby sales center offers work of local potters.

As historical as Japan is, rivalling Europe, there is very little left of the history of Japan to explore. The fact that this castle (dating from 1609) is in ruins and is still a prominent tourist attraction in Sasayama illustrates the point. There isn't much left of the castle itself with most of the buildings destroyed in the Meji, leaving only the administrative chamber in tact, but which itself was destroyed by fire in 1944. The castle walls and moats however remain with the entrance/administrative building having been rebuilt, but little else remains. Inside the castle walls there is wide open ground. A map identifies where particular buildings would have been, so a vivid imagination is required. There are extensive views of the town and the surrounding countryside from the castle ruins explaining why the castle was an important fortress of the time. There is a charming shrine built on one side of the castle grounds (Aoyama Shrine) and dating from 1882. I would recommend a visit if you are in the area.

There was very little English, so if you don't have a Japanese speaker with you it will be less interesting. Also no pictures allowed inside. There was some historical Art displayed that was nice and some historical maps with information on traveling during the Meiji Era. This building was the old courthouse and they persevered one room to show a trial room.
