Built in 1758 to guard a strategic port along a major transportation route, today this national site maintains an extensive archaeological collection and a nearly complete reconstructed Revolutionary War fort with interpreters.
The log fort is a wonderful reconstruction of the Revolutionary War fort. The Vistor's Center has very interesting displays and excellent films providing a good background to the history of the fort and the area. The Park Ranger was very helpful. Even the rain did not diminish the visit.

It's a very important Revolutionary War site, one of the battles that assisted the troops at Saratoga, turning the war. But you'll have to either know the story of the battle or use your imagination. Because there isn't a lot of help here. An impressive obelisk, a couple of plaques. It's a great greenspace. But very little historic explanation available here.

Fort Rickey is a special kind of zoo with a focus on fun and interaction. We understand that children learn best and remember best when they are actively engaged. We offer feeding and petting areas, a maternity ward with baby goats and animal shows featuring wolves, otters and snakes. A giant tube and tunnel maze with ball crawl and slides compliments the hands on approach.
We just traveled to the Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo for a day trip from Syracuse. There were two adults and seven kids ranging in ages from 2-16. We began our adventure with the noon snake show featuring a python snake. Our young snake keeper arrived with the snake around her neck and waist. She told us all about the habitat and eating habits of the python and answered most of our questions. Each child/adult was able to pet the snake and then take a picture with the handler and snake if they chose to. After that 20 minute show we took advantage of the picnic area they provide. They allow you to bring in your own food and coolers which saves so much money for families. We had just enough time to eat to make the 1pm opening of the maternity ward which is a fenced in area of baby goats, mothers and some sheep. After a quck run down of the rules, kids are encouraged to hold the animals while seated so as to not cause any harm to the animals. We all loved that! Then off to feed and pet deer in another fenced in enclosure. How many times can you ever pet to pet a deer? They love the feed filled ice cream cones, 3 cones for $4.00. We saw wallabie;s, ostrich,, goats, tortoise, spider monkeys, bunnies, porcupines and beautiful white wolves. The owner/trainer gets inside their enclosure and the animals respond to him like a favorite pet. They licked his face and allowed his to pet them. They certainly love their trainer. The Zoo is small and walkable for all ages. All of our 2-4 year olds had no problem walking the entire zoo. The staff is very friendly and willing to answer any questions you might have. All areas are clean and well maintained. Be prepared to share your lunch with some chickens and peacocks who are very use to human interaction.

Restored 1929 gas station, originally built by Howard P. Sears. Museum is part of an effort to revitalize downtown historic district of Rome, New York.
I found this place accidentally three years ago and was SO disappointed that it was closed. This time it was open and I was delighted. The volunteer working the place actually worked for four years at a different Sears Station. He had a wealth of information. There is a great large wall hanging to flip through to see the history of these small gas stations.

There are only a few waterfront sites. Unfortunately campers on non-waterfront sites make it their business to dock their boats & jet skis on other people's waterfront sites. Then they hang out most of the day swimming & partying right in front of you. There is a beach & boat launch for everyone to use so there is no need for it. Otherwise a very good Park. Too bad ignorant people spoil it.

I highly recommend stopping by the Capitol Theatre if you're in the area. In addition to the amazing Capitolfest film festival every August they also have other films and events throughout the year. The Griffiss International Sculpture Park is a fairly new installation. We were looking for something new to do since we’ve been to Rome many times. I discovered the sculpture park on Trip Advisor and we decided to go. It’s basically an outdoor walking path. You can decide to walk the loop path as a .5 mile, 1 mile, 1.5 mile walk. Along the way you’ll see various sculptures. We had fun and it gave us something outdoors to do.

If you are visiting Fort Stanwix National Monument, going over to the Rome Historical Society and Museum, just makes sense. They have a lot of display items and it goes hand in hand with Fort Stanwix Fort Schyler park. It's not that far out of the way. Lots of things to see. We learned about how Rome has a modern past history of an Air Force presence and they have a display of air traffic control panel. A ton of Revolutionary War artifacts. Lots of history of Central NY. It's a small museum but it has lots of different displays. Gift Shop.

I was driving through upstate New York and spotted this quiet little spot along the Erie Canal to stop and have lunch. As it turns out, this is just the place where they just added a few miles of hiking, biking walking trail. We walked the trail which was beautiful and included a walking bridge over the waterfalls. As we were walking we walked right through a live pres conference where they were celebrating the opening of this new trail. There were a few sailboats moored along the canal wall, a kayak gracefully gliding across the water, some fishermen in a pontoon boat and a very cute little pier with a launching apparatus for kayaks. I never saw anything like it. Pretty cool indeed! We walked for a half an hour and continued on our trip.
