Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre

Reviewed By Canadian_Guy1000 - Toronto, Canada

In this very frantic and fast-paced world, there are not too many places like Manresa, where we can spend a couple of days in prayer and contemplations, deepen our relationship with God, focus on our faith, examine our life and attain a degree of spiritual renewal. The Manresa retreat center property originally was a farm. In 1912 George Herbert Hyde Villiers (Lord Hyde), 6th Earl of Clarendon (1877–1955) built a large house, known as the Manor House, as well as a carriage house, riding stables, servants' quarters and large dog kennel. He lived there with his family until 1914, the outbreak of the First World War. From 1931 to 1937 he served as Governor-General of the Union of South Africa and between 1938 and 1952 as Lord Chamberlain of the Household to King George VI. The property was purchased by the Jesuits in 1949. Manresa is located on twenty one acres of a picturesque property at the north end of Liverpool Road in Pickering, Ontario. Just keep driving to the very end of the road, wait for a few seconds until the gate automatically opens, turn left and you are there! You can also enjoy walking trails in adjoining conservation lands and walk up to Duffins Creek, where salmon make their way up the creek. La Storta Jesuit community and the Rene Goupil House retirement community, where elderly and infirm Jesuits reside and are cared for, are situated nearby. Upon a friend’s heartfelt recommendations, I attended my first Ignatian Weekend Retreat at Manresa in October, 1994. I had not even signed up beforehand, just called the office the same day and was invited to show up. As the retreat was almost full, I had to wait until 9:00 p.m. to be assigned a room by Fr. John Egli O'Brien, S.J., director of Manresa at that time. The retreat was given by Fr. Doug McCarthy, S.J. It must have made a lasting impression on me, because since 1994 I have participated, every consecutive year, in 27 Ignatian Weekend Retreats and I am looking forward to making many more retreats. When I first arrived at Manresa, the old chapel was still standing, yet the construction had already started on the new one. In 1995 the new chapel was completed and the old one demolished. Since then a lot of necessary renovations and improvements have been made. However, there are long-range plans to eventually build a New Manresa. The Ignatian Weekend Retreat commences on Friday at 8:30 p.m. and ends at the Sunday closing lunch at 12:30 p.m. Since it is a silent retreat, all retreatants are expected to refrain from talking throughout the duration of the retreat. According to numerous testimonials (including my own), the silence it the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the retreat—for many people it is a totally new, inspiring and refreshing experience! However, it is acceptable to talk with one another on Friday evening, prior to the 8:30 p.m. orientation/conference and during the closing lunch on Sunday—a perfect opportunity to catch up with old acquaintances or friends and make new ones! Each retreatant gets a private room with at least a sink, but many rooms have bathrooms and some even showers. There are also showers and bathrooms on each floor. One room, separate from the main building, is a designated smoking area. Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cold beverages or snacks are available at the small kitchen 24 hours per day. On Saturday and Sunday, after the 7:30 a.m. rise, retreatants begin the day with an 8:00 a.m. morning prayer in St. Ignatius Chapel, which is open 24 hours per day. Over the duration of the retreat there are four input sessions, a reconciliation service/confession, a Way of the Cross (usually outdoors, weather permitting) and a Eucharistic Celebration on Saturday and Sunday. Everyone can take advantage of one-on-one consultation with staff members. Altogether five delicious buffet-style meals are served over the weekend at the Manor House, a one minute walk from the chapel & the building where retreatants stay. A small store offers books and religious items for sale. Retreatants may take part as much or as little of the daily program at Manresa as they feel is appropriate—there is NEVER any compulsion whatsoever to participate in ANY activities. Besides, everyone has plenty of private time to pray, read (there is a small library), meditate, stroll on Manresa’s grounds or perform one (or all) of the three outdoor walking meditations—the Way of the Cross, Rosary Lane and the Labyrinth. If you are lucky, you might spot a deer or a beautiful fox. There are retreats for men, for women and for both men & women. The suggested donation for a weekend retreat is about $220, which, in my opinion, is very reasonable. In addition to the Ignatian Retreats, Manresa offers 12 Step Programs for members of Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), Al-anon and other addiction groups (these retreats are ecumenical with many non-Catholics in attendance), as well as individually directed retreats lasting 30 days, 8 days, 5 days or 3 days.
