Erie Canal

The superhighway of pre-Civil War America, this marvel of human engineering and labor, built from Albany to Buffalo, opened up America's frontier to the west.

I love living within walking distance of the historic Erie Canal in the village of Fairport. The path along the canal is great for walking or cycling. The path is paved and well lit at night. Enjoyable to walk the path anytime of year. An added bonus is the variety of restaurants and shops in close proximity to the canal.

Mendon Ponds Park is our favorite park in all of Monroe County. Hiking, walking the dog, canoeing, kayaking, snowshoeing, sledding, cross-country skiing, watching birds or the stars, picnicking, leaf peeping--this park has it all!! My husband and I love Mendon Ponds Park so much that we moved to be closer to it.

Wickham Farms

Wickham Farms has been on Route 250 in Penfield for nearly 30 years offering kiddie train rides, a jumping pillow, mini-golf, batting cages, food, and ice cream. Enjoy their corn maze, hayrides, Mums and 7 different kinds of heirloom & specialty pumpkins in the Fall. They host birthday parties, field trips, story times, and annual events as well as a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. The farm is open Spring through October.

I brought my granddaughter here during October pumpkin picking season. It was very busy as expected on a pleasant Saturday. They do offer lots of different activities - corn maze, jumping pillow, little train ride, apple picking, sunflower picking, food.

My granddaughter loves the jumping pillow but no way would I allow a young child to jump on that without an adult. It's really surprising that kids aren't getting hurt. Just as it sounds, it is a large inflated rubbery pillow thing that one jumps on. It is not supervised and kids of all sizes and ages are having a free-for-all time. Some kids get out of control with their jumping. Some lose their balance and tumble down the sloping sides to the hard packed sandy surface. It was too wild for my comfort.

We tried the fried apple slices. They are slices dunked in what tasted like a donut batter of some kind and deep fried. They were very good.

I'm sure the website lists all the activities available at Wickham Farms. It has really grown over the years. Maybe a little too much.

We went out to see a current-run movie at this theater this past weekend. The theater was nice and clean and did offer the newly-in-fashion recliner seats. The parking lot was also large enough to handle all cars, and everything else (except the price of the food-and-drink at the concession stand) worked well. They have online ticket sales as well, so I could not think of a single improvement to recommend. This is a great theater.

Corbett's Glen Nature Park

Reviewed By Freespirit134 - Rochester, New York

Suburban creek-side nature walk with well-established trails to follow. A charming spot for a stroll. Easy trails with gentle slopes, nothing difficult. Bring water shoes in warm weather in case wading in the creek is attractive to you! Plenty of walkers bring their dogs, and leashes are required, unless you want a ticket & fine. Weekends can get busy, and parking is limited. Be aware there are two places to enter the park, one off of Penfield Road, and the other off of Glen Road--an important clarification if you're planning to meet someone there.

Whether you go solo or with a group, Painting with a Twist is great fun. Experienced or not, you have the opportunity to complete a painting in one visit...and you can bring wine and snacks to enjoy during your session. This organization will also block out a time for a private party of 10 or more participants. Cost which includes instruction and all materials needed is very reasonable. Give it a try!

They can also host a children's party (no wine permitted)!

Harris Whalen Park

Reviewed By stmayhem - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

This park is located right across the street from the Penfield Wegmans, and near the H.W. elementary school. It's a common site for Town of Penfield events during the summers, including the annual fireworks displays. (Arrive early for these, though you may also want to consider setting up in the parking lot across the street for a good view, convenient access to food/drink/restrooms, and somewhat easier exit afterwards.)

In the winter, the sledding here is awesome, though some of the hills may be too steep (and icy) for the smaller kids, so choose your location carefully.

Summer time is great for picnics (several small shelters/buildings are available for groups), and there's both playground equipment and tennis courts handy.

Big oak Driving Range

Reviewed By Larry W - Rochester, New York

Big Oak isn't really a "family entertainment area" as much as an old-fashioned golf driving range where you can work on your game with the added benefit of seasoned golf-pro instructors. It isn't fancy, and there are no miniature golf courses on the grounds. But it is a nice range, and the pro shop (and folks who work in there) are also great. I do recommend this place, especially later in the year after some of the other ranges have already shut down.
