This secluded canyon, home to many ferns, makes for an interesting hike.
An easy short walk through a lush , peaceful fern lined canyon . High walls . Very unique .Nothing but green ! Your feet will get a little wet. Hard to believe it’s right next to sandy Golds beach , which is also beautiful .

This state park, established in 1923, is part of the Redwoods National and State Park System.
We had a wonderful time hiking through this park. We hiked about 13 miles along the Miner’s Ridge Trail, Gold Bluffs Beach, Fern Canyon, and back via the James Irvine Trail. It was a tough long hike with lots of climbing but worth it. The views were amazing and the photos were beautiful.

Easy to get to and an easy stroll through a very beautiful grove of old growth redwoods. A piece of history that could have easily been lost , but has been preserved in this grove.

Ok, so perhaps not quite as amazing as the Avenue of the Giants, but you'll be driving thru this area anyway to get to the Avenue so why not stop?!? I admit, we almost didn't and I'm so grateful that we had! We had our two small children with us, aged 8 and 5, neither of which are much "hikers". There were still several trailheads to pull over and take leisurely strolls thru some magnificent, ancient trees. When (not "if"!) we return I will plan on spending more time exploring more of the turn outs. I can see one easily spending a full day here, if not more. Highest recommendation for those that are driving through this stretch of the Northern California coast and have the time for a very worthwhile detour!

This is one of the few Visitor Centers currently open in the Redwood National and State Parks system. It handles Prairie Creek State Park, which has the most extensive and varied hiking trails of the parks in the system. Stop here to get maps and information for this state park, but use Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center instead for Redwood National Park and to get your passport stamped. The Visitor Center has been re-configured for Covid purposes. Enter the building, walk past the nice ranger at the desk (ask your trail and wildlife questions here), follow the arrows one way through the gift shop, and exit at a second door. Outside are two picnic tables, many benches facing a meadow, and a separate building with flush toilets. There didn’t seem to be any fees collected to enter either Redwood National Park or Prairie Creek State Park when we were there. A number of fantastic hiking trails start or connect to this Visitor Center: Prairie Creek, Foothill, Cathedral Trees, James Irvine and West Ridge, to name a few. If you’re more of a walker than a hiker, at least go for a stroll out on the fairly flat Prairie Creek trail. Just a few feet from the Visitor Center and it’s like you’ve entered a magical new world made up of lush ferns, clover, and towering redwoods.

A beautiful and secluded beach where one can walk a long distance.
A peaceful, short walk through the dunes to a spectacular beach! Smooth sands, crisp ocean smell, and thunderous, crashing waves will greet YOU. When looking down the shore, way off in the distance, it seems to disappear in a mist.

We went of the 2.5 hour tour today and had a great time. I thought Kimberly was knowledgeable about the forest and did well with the horses. My horse was a bit lazy, but a few giddy ups and he kept up. I recommend this place!
