Recently visited Free State Cellars in Orange, Tx. The winery sits on the Old Piney Woods Winery grounds. While we were there we first sampled a glass of strawberry lemonade sangria as we walked through the vineyard for a few pictures. It was quite refreshing. Following our stroll through the vineyard we headed to the brand new tasting room and sampled all of the Texas wines offered at the time, along with provided food pairings. Our server Antonio described the different wines, from dry to sweet and suggested food pairings. The winery is just now opening and has many future plans including renovations of the old house for wedding and other private functions. If you are near Orange and looking to do something a little different one evening, stop by Free State Cellars, take in the scenery and sip on a glass of Texas wine

A hidden gem in the middle of Orange. Beautiful gardens and ponds with year-round blooms. Lots of beautiful birds also. Incredibly helpful staff that answer all of your questions. Great educational programs for area schools also. And it’s FREE. They’ve had their ups and downs over the last decade with hurricanes and floods, but are back at it, better than ever.

The Stark Museum of Art houses one of the finest collections of nineteenth and twentieth century Western American art in the country. It focuses on the stunning land, dramatic people and diverse wildlife of the West. Paintings, sculpture and prints interpret the West from nineteenth century frontier artists to twentieth century artistic colonies. Artists include John James Audubon, Frederic Remington, Charles Marion Russell and Georgia O’Keeffe. Also, American Indian art; decorative arts; special changing exhibitions.
This art museum has an amazing collection of Southwestern Art, as well as historical exhibits about the founding and development of Orange, Texas. I have visited many top art museums in the U.S. and around the world and this museum stands tall among them.

The W.H. Stark House stands much as it did at the turn of the 20th century. With its 14,000 square feet and 15 rooms, the Stark House holds a significant display of original family furnishings, china, silver, rugs, porcelains, glass, artwork, woodwork, and lighting. From the one-of-a-kind sterling silver tea service on the First Floor to the rare Napoleon death mask on the Third Floor, each level of the Stark House offers an extraordinary glimpse at the lifestyle of the prominent timber family who occupied it from 1894-1936.

If you’re entering Texas from Louisiana, you really should stop here They have information and brochures available for tourist stops statewide. While you’re there, go out the back door and walk the boardwalk out over the Blue Elbow Swamp. You’ll likely see lots of birds, turtles and maybe even some gators. It’s a great place to take a pit stop.
