Initially designated as Great Cow Harbour by 17th-century English colonists, the area was officially renamed Northport in 1837. The John W. Engeman Theater at Northport is Long Island's only year-round professional theater, casting its actors directly from the Broadway talent pool. Featuring stadium-style seating, state-of-the-art lighting and sound, and The Green Room Lounge.
It is usually said that locals don't know what is in their own backyard, e.g., New Yorkers who never have visited the Statue of Liberty, but I consider myself a lucky local to have discovered this excellent theatre and show venue right in my own backyard!
Though the theatre has been in existence for several years, only within the last four or five have I subscribed to the season's offerings.
And, boy, am I glad I did! EVERYTHING I have seen there rises to the level of anything that could be on Broadway! Actors Equity caliber entertainers come out from NYC to perform. It is a stellar cast, usually, performing in well-rehearsed and choreographed productions.
The theatre itself is a posh outpost, with a full bar in the lobby and cushy lobby seating. It has "Professional" written all over it and is polished to a fare-thee-well by the attentive and accomodating staff.
No matter what is playing there, rest assured that you will not walk away disappointed!

The Vanderbilt Museum is located on the 43-acre waterfront estate of William K. Vanderbilt II, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. His “Eagle’s Nest” mansion is itself a museum that preserves a privileged way of life from America’s Jazz Age through the Great Depression, made possible by the family’s railroad fortune. In ocean-going yachts, Vanderbilt circumnavigated the globe in the 1920s and 1930s. He brought back thousands of marine, animal, insect and bird specimens and cultural artifacts that form a second museum of notable cultural, educational and historic value. The state-of-the-art Reichert Planetarium, with its 60-foot dome and theater, is the largest astronomical facility on Long Island. Throughout the year, the Museum offers intriguing programs for all ages, which are based on the animal habitats, large marine and natural-history collections, the mansion and Vanderbilt family history, and include extraordinary celestial shows on the planetarium dome.
Visited this evening at the 10pm Pink Floyd Laser Light show. IT wasn't crowded. Affordable and a delightful evening out. There were many young people and adults. The place has a wonderful gift shop for the upcoming Christmas season. The process are phenomenal. The light show was good, the amount of noise was just right and the seating was perfect. A must try on this hidden little road overlooking the Long Island Sound... you can see Connecticut form here. If you are disabled they have a buggy that the security people will transport you by. Go ahead check this place out! WE LOVED it

Makamah is an amazing nature preserve. It’s large and has tons of twists and turns through the wild that can give even the fittest runners a challenge. It’s beautiful and offers tons of photogenic opportunities. For Nature preserves on Long Island, this is definitely one to go to, on a weekend adventure

Great park for a 4-mile round trip walk. Great scenery and view of the LI Sound. Many bike riders. Mostly paved trails, but a lot of off-road trails available. When we went for the walk, there were no houses to tour and all were closed to the public. Only a few restrooms; bring your water and refreshments. Trails had some benches to rest.

Part scavenger hunt, part race, part mystery game, players race against the clock to find clues, uncover hidden messages and themes, and solve riddles and logic puzzles with the goal of unlocking the room door within a frenzied 60 minutes.
We visited Cryptique this past Friday, two couples and our four teenage daughters. This was our first room escape experience, and we didn’t really know what to expect. This is where Kelly Clark, the owner, stepped in and provided all of the necessary answers to get us started.
I cannot adequately express how impressed I was with how intricately planned the experience was! The amount of thought that went into Grandma’s Basement is incredible. Even though we didn’t escape, there were countless little puzzle solving victories that made us feel proud of ourselves and of our team. At the end, Kelly came in to show us how tantalizingly close we came to escaping, and afterward, we had a great time recounting all of the “woulda/coulda/shouldas” at dinner in Northport Village.
Kelly was a fabulous host, and her passion for her work is obvious. This is a “can’t miss” experience!
Cryptique, our first experience has taught us a lot, and we will be back to attempt our next escape!

A venue like no other.
I went to see Squeeze at The Paramount earlier this month. It is a smallish venue in the very cute Huntington Village. The floor "seats" are general admission, and these folks have the best view of the stage, but they're standing for the entire show. There's a bar on that level. There is also a level where you can purchase assigned seats. Further up is the Sky Bar, which is the cheapest section, without assigned seats. There are bar stools, however, and the view is still good. We had seats in the Sky Bar, and they were fine. For the next show I'm seeing at The Paramount, we've purchased seats. Really like this venue!

The Heckscher Museum of Art is located in scenic Heckscher Park, in Huntington, New York, within walking distance of downtown shops and award-winning restaurants. The Museum provides a dynamic schedule of changing exhibitions on American art.
We have visited this museum twice in the past month. The exhibition featuring Long Island Artists was excellent. The current exhibition "Norman Rockwell and Friends: American Illustrations from the Mort Kuntsler Collection" is also excellent. The Museum has a "First Friday" series with free Museum Admission and a musical performance at 7 p.m.
