Munneshwaram Hindu temple

Reviewed By bolkar

Our driver/guide Mr. Gamini picked up up from our hotel Ramada Inn Colombo on February 1st at 9 am and our journey in Sri Lanka started ! Next stop Chilaw to visit Munneshwara temple and Manavari Temple ! Colombo to Chilaw on expressway/E03, and Rt A3 is about1hr 30min about 73km ! The Munneshwaram temple is an important regional Hindu temple in Sri Lanka. It has been in existence at least since 1000 CE ! According to Wiki " The construction began in 10th century CE. The temple is one of the ancient Pancha Ishwarams dedicated to Shiva in the region !The temple complex is a collection of five temples, including a Buddhist temple. The temple was destroyed twice by the Portuguese colonial officers, who handed over the properties to the Jesuits. Although the Jesuits built a Catholic chapel over the temple foundation, locals reconstructed the temple both times, once in 1578 and again in 1623". The Temple is beautiful ! Worth a visit !

Modern day work of art on a grand scale. Lovely atmosphere helped by the resident monks and pilgrims from the south. They appear to be starting a rock sculpted Ganesh as well.

This beautiful place is not so well known, but it should be. Beautiful temple, great views and history and friendly people. We stayed for two nights at the temple and they treated us like kings. We even got to meet the highest monk. More people should visit this!

Anawilundawa Wetland Sanctuary

Reviewed By nir0sh - Colombo, Sri Lanka

Everyone knows Anawilundawa Ramsa Wetland as a bird sanctuary. But it is good for landscape photography as well. It is entrance free bird sanctuary and best time is from Octomber to April to view migratory birds. Anawilundawa Ramsa Wetland consists of six lakes and surrounding paddy fields. Out of six lakes Maiyawa Lake, Surawila Lake and Anawilundawa Lake are good places for bird watching and landscape photography. Shady lake bunts and greenish paddy fields are my favorites here. Better go on early morning or evening to capture birds.

Munneswaram Kovil Temple

Lord Rama after his victorious battle left for Ayodhya in one of King Ravana's vimana's. He felt he was being followed by “Brahmahasthi Dosham” as he had killed King Ravana who was a Brahmin. He stopped the vimana at this juncture because he felt at this place the 11`Brahma hasthi Dosham" was not following him. He ascended from the vimana and asked God Shiva for a remedy. God Shiva blessed Lord Rama and advised him to install four lingams at Manavari, Thiru Koneshwaram, Thiru Ketheshwaram and Rameshwaram in India and pray, as the only remedy to get rid of the “Brahmahasthi Dosham”.
