A number of areas for visitors along Lake Tahoe, with the most popular being Sand Harbor.
We planned the tour at the beginning of our trip so we would have an idea of where we might want to return. The tour was more fun and informative than we ever imagined. It was literally one of the best parts of our trip! Jim was an amazing guide.

Rocky coves and boulders to jump off of are the primary features of this beach.
This is a beautiful state park well worth the $10 entrance fee along the east shoreline of Lake Tahoe. You can use the entrance fee the same day to visit Cave Rock state park as well which is closer to South Lake Tahoe. The walking paths along the shore of Sand Harbor are very nice and the scenery is excellent. Check out the visitors center as well.

Look out over Emerald Bay.
Breathtaking scenery! Don’t miss it. Be careful driving up the winding road. Not a lot of guardrails!

A beautiful and well-marked trail.
This hike is about 2 miles if you just go to the lake and back, which is what I did with my 10-year-old lab. Good dog-friendly hike where other dog-owners mostly kept their dogs on leashes as well. Some of the stone steps are a little high so you might need to pick your dog up if you have a small one but otherwise pretty straightforward. Weekends are impossible to park and we had to come back during the week and early in the morning to get a spot. Beautiful hike with great views, interesting terrain, and a amazing lake at the end.

This museum documents the fascinating and tragic history of the Donner Party's journey to the west coast.
First, avoid the $10 parking lot charge by parking along the street if you can. The museum is well worth a stop, as it gives a good overview of what the emigrants faced on their trip west. There is a 26-minute film, and there are well maintained walking trails.

Went here when in a girls trip with buddies and it did not dissapoint! Quite, due to the fall weather, but gorgeous day. We loved it! A bit of everything, some forest and trail, the beach and water and a dock:) The only sad part was graffiti in the form of names carved into the beautiful wood on the dock :( which seemed new and made out of beautiful wood.

Take a panoramic 10 minute ride that climbs 2,000 vertical feet and soars above a mountainscape of granite rock, waterfalls and the iconic Tram Face. And that's just the beginning. Once you reach your destination at High Camp, located at 8,200', breathe in the fresh mountain air and immerse yourself in the High Sierra. Whether you're looking to set out on one of the many hiking and walking trails, cool off in the mountaintop pool and hot tub or take a spin around the roller rink overlooking Lake Tahoe, there is something to spark everyone's inner mountain explorer.
Our family of 4 spent the afternoon at Squaw Valley. We ate at the Dubliner ( would highly recommend the Chicken Boxty with Whiskey cream and the Rueben Fries!!) The tram was such a fun ride during the summer- so much and so far to see! We walked on several trails and enjoyed the views and wildflowers. There are so many things to do here-swim, hike, mt bike, etc. Smoke from the Yosemite fires blew in which obscured the views late in the afternoon but it was still amazing! Would love to ski here someday!

For the modern family that prefers substance with a unique, laid-back style, Northstar California Resort combines California cool with high-end luxury, on-mountain exhilaration with a sophisticated alpine village atmosphere. Halfway between one of North America's coolest mountain towns and one of the world's most beautiful alpine lakes, Northstar is a destination on the rise, having poured nearly a billion dollars into creating Lake Tahoe's premier luxury snowsports experience. Upscale shops, refined dining and Lake Tahoe's only five-star slopeside lodging is married to impeccable grooming, incredible tree skiing and enough variety to challenge every level of skier (and world-class terrain parks to keep the kids busy). Those who come to Northstar know what they're looking for. Sometimes it's adventure, sometimes it's to learn, sometimes it's to relax in a welcoming place with family and friends. No matter what that experience is, they'll find it to be exactly the way it should be.
Spent 2 days skiing at Northstar, and this was a great experience. Resort was very busy, slopes were well maintained, and we enjoyed a variety of slopes for all level skiers. There is also a great free style park for anyone to enjoy. It takes just over an hour from Reno airport to drive there, so pretty easy access.
