Shenandoah Caverns has been thrilling visitors since 1922. It is the only Virginia cavern with elevator service, making it one of the easiest caverns to tour. It's also the closest major cavern to I-81 (Exit 269). Our famous bacon formations are so unusual they were featured in National Geographic. Personally guided tours through our 17 soaring rooms take approximately one hour. Also see our other attractions: Main Street of Yesteryear, American Celebration on Parade (open seasonally), and the Yellow Barn. Open all year. Located 2 minutes from I-81, Exit 269, five miles north of New Market, VA in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Let the exploration begin! Please keep in mind that while Shenandoah Caverns does have an elevator, it is not considered handicap accessible. The pathway is crushed gravel with slight inclines throughout the tour, so assistance is required to navigate the tour via wheelchair. There is also one small portion that is not accessible by wheelchair at all. If you are walking the tour, you must be able to stand for one hour and walk one mile. If you have any questions about accessibility, please give us a call.
This is a good tour to take and see the sights of nature at work. We appreciated the elevator and really enjoyed our young tourguide. I definitely recommend seeing this cave.

in the area checking out a campground for this summer. Factory 1/2 mile from campground! Self-guided tour and very friendly/knowledgeable staff. Free samples of ALL flavors! Don't forget to ask about "broken bag" specials. Just the smell makes your mouth water! Then you sample! Then you buy! Great fresh crafted chips. We'll stop here anytime we're with an hour's drive!!! Love it!

We were traveling with seniors, on our way to Mont Tremblant and this was one of our stops. How enjoyable was this!!!! Took lots and lots of fun pictures. Floats from holidays, Presidential Parades, and other festivals lifesize and colorful. My husband and I didn't think we would enjoy this attraction but boy what fun this was. This is one hidden gem. Traveled all over the US and Canada and bypassed this. How sad! Admission is so affordable ($10 I think) You can get on some of these floats for some fantastic pictures. Enjoyable for all age groups, kids and seniors alike. These are originals no reproductions. Give yourself enough time to gawk at them. Grounds outdoors are beautiful and picturesque. Free parking and picnic tables outdoors. What a great treat for the family without breaking the bank!

This is the only state-owned Civil War museum in Virginia and is administered by the Virginia Military Institute. The site consists of three elements: The Virginia Museum of the Civil War, the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and the Historic Bushong Farm. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail System. The museum focuses on the whole war in the Commonwealth of Virginia with special attention paid to the Battle of New Market on May 15th 1864 and the role played by the corps of cadets from the Virginia Military Institute. A total of 257 cadets from VMI participated in the battle with 47 wounded and 10 killed because of the fighting. The museum features exhibits, dioramas, artifacts from the battle and an Emmy-award winning film called Field of Lost Shoes shown hourly in the theater. Outside visitors will enjoy three hundred acres of core battlefield property accessible by foot or car. The New Market Battlefield State Historical Park offers two walking trails across the farm and battlefield terminating atop Bushong's Hill and two scenic overlooks 100 feet above the Shenandoah River. Historically-named features include the Field of Lost Shoes, a wheatfield so named by cadets because of lost footwear, and the Fatal Orchard, a dangerous part of the battlefield next to the farm. Finally, the Bushong Farm features seven buildings to explore. The two frame houses were witnesses to the battle that day. Exhibits inside tell the story of what life was like in the Shenandoah Valley before and during the Civil War.
This was an excellent museum showing the civil war in Virginia and especially the part Virginia Military Institute played in the New Market Battle. Be sure to watch the movie, it was done very well. We walked the trails afterwards to where the family stayed in the cellar during the battle. Hard to imagine the two sides were as close as they were. Be sure to learn about the field of shoes.
We would recommend this to anyone.

Wish we had found this earlier so we could have spent more time. The movie Field of Lost Shoes is based on this site. A group of cadets at the Virginia Military Institute who participated in the Battle of New Market against U.S. forces during the American Civil War. The battle was fought in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia on May 15, 1864. The name of the movie came from the fact of many shoes were left on the battlefield because of the muddy conditions during the battle.

You will find De Mello Vineyards nestled in the folds of the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley. We sit directly under Third Hill, one of the conspicuous landmarks in the valley, used as a signal station during the Civil War. Our little winery has amazing views and beautiful sunsets with a westerly exposure which our vines adore. Our terrior has the ideal components for an excellent wine with its limestone and clay soils. Our tasting room embraces the essence of the valley with reclaimed wood, an intricate walnut bar. Come and wine down at Third Hill Winery and experience the Shenandoah piece of mind.
Rolled up to the winery on a cold winter day... snow on the ground - a beautiful view! 8 of us tasted the wines in the large and inviting tasting room. Very artistic use of wood on the first floor and in the loft. We...MorePlease do come back and sit by the fire, a lovely way to spend a winters afternoon!

A cave complex that is still being explored and offers more than five miles of mapped areas.
We decided to come here rather than the more publicized Luray Caverns after speaking to a local who said these Caverns were much better. We came there with three tween daughters. The tour guide, Jake, was an absolute joy both in his personality and his interaction with the tour group. It took us 1 1/2 hours and although we were there on a slow day, we were never rushed and the tour was interesting the entire time. The caverns were beautiful and our daughters were engaged with the sights and science of it all. It was an excellent family excursion!

We visited after we toured the nice caverns at the top[ of the hill. Nice variety of old time vehicles and signs and such as well as some overhead model trains. Also a small selection of parade float items.

Site of the 1864 Civil War Battle of New Market
We had planned to visit the Virginia Civil War Museum but found this place on the road in. There is lots of free parking and the building is set just off the road -you can't miss it.
We asked the lady behind the counter about this place in comparison to the Civil War Museum and she explained that this place covered much more than the Civil War. She was a bit curt but don't let that put you off as this is a great place to visit.
The museum has thousands of individual items and it could take a day to go through every single one and read about it. We spent about 2 hours here, saw everything but only read what we wanted. As well as many Civil War items, the museum has good exhibits on the American Indians, the Mexican War and the 2 World Wars.
But it's the Civil War -and the nearby battlefield -that get biggest billing. I have never seen so many original photographs from that time period including Robert E Lee and his generals, but mainly of ordinary soldiers. It's amazing. As a non-American I don't have an axe to grind but this place does tend to be more Confederacy biased and states in the gift shop that they "proudly sell the Confederate Flag". I could understand why it might not be for everyone, but I really liked this place.
