The Highground Veterans Memorial Park

The Highground near Neillsville, WI is a 155-acre manned veterans memorial park that pays tribute to the dead, and honors the survivors, their service, and their sacrifices. The Highground fulfills its mission of healing and education by bringing past lessons into our hopes for the future. We seek to have The Highground continue to be a focus of healing for all who come, regardless of the name of the battle which left the scars. The park includes tributes to veterans of WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Persian Gulf (Desert Storm to present), as well as, a National Native American Vietnam Memorial, a Military Working Dog Tribute, a Meditation Garden, a handicap accessible Treehouse, an exact replica of the Liberty Bell, Effigy Mound, a Learning Center (with a library) and 4 miles of hiking trails. The Park continues to grow as history unfolds. Located three miles west of Neillsville on US Hwy 10, the park is lighted and open to visitors year round 24 hours a day.

The Highground Veterans Memorial Park - Neillsville, WI. A memorial park that pays tribute to the service members for their sacrifices and service. Our family had a special plaque placed in the Korean War memorial for our hero and father. Any American should view this wonderful place.

CART is an amazing addition to the already lovely community of Neillsville, Wisconsin. CART will give you the opportunity to take classes of all varieties while being able to mingle and fellowship with the awesome people of Neillsville and CART. If you have the opportunity, DO NOT miss out on a chance to walk around, take a class, or just chat up the people at CART. I came from 580 miles away and felt more at home at CART than in my own city. Ask for Linda, Barb or Dr. Sarah and you're assured a great experience in Neillsville and Central Wisconsin!

Reed School

Reviewed By hatchpal4u - WI

A man who attended Reed School (a one room schoolhouse) for six weeks as a six year old was so enamored years after it closed when he found it standing still he went about purchasing the school and adjoining acreage and refurbishing the interior. Several original features remain. Intrepretive teachers guide students through a full day experience (or shorter if you need to) about what a typical Reed School one room schoolroom experience was like. From breaking into small groups based on age to do activities where he guides one group at a time and then the other groups combine older with younger ages to teach and work with each other. The students will engage in everday activities and chores as the typical students of the period would. Period dress and lunches are encouraged. What's fascinating too is the history of the place and discussion of that. The owner pays for everything so Reed School is free. If your class can't book bring the family on the weekend when they're open seasonally (they can open at other times based on request too) and at least check it out. It's an experience the kids and adults alike won't soon forget. Although it's geared towards 4th graders any age is welcome. Our group had ages 6-18 and all enjoyed it thoroughly. There's also a neat Veteran's memorial in Neillsville to check out as well. One highlight was the kids participating in the radio Let's Draw program of 1932.

Levis Mound Trail

Reviewed By Ellen R - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States

This Clark County gem will take your breath away, both because of its beauty, and it's challenging hills! With 34 miles of well marked, scenic trails, you will need to plan a return trip to see it all!
This place is accommodating and welcoming with a nice covered porch and picnic tables, bathroom with running water, maps to put in your pocket (be sure to grab your map!), large parking area and very well maintained grounds. There is a trail fee for biking and cross country skiing, but not if you are just walking, although I would have gladly paid a couple of dollars, it is so worth it!
Fun for the whole family, including leashed dogs, I greatly enjoyed the 1.5 mile interpretive self-guided trail, which might have been new? It is on a double wide path, and has at least 15 stops that explain the type of trees, groundcover, challenges and successes with conservation, impact of glaciers, gypsy moths and fire. I learned a lot, and never felt disoriented or lost since it was an easy trail to follow. If your are agile and want a bigger hike, climb porky's point, either Hermosa or Upper Hermosa, goats, Northface, really pick any of the paths, the views are simply amazing!
My partner, the mountain biker, goes nutso at the very mention of this unique and special place. He loves the upper Glen, Cork Screw, plumber's crack and Hermosa. There are beginner and advanced trails, and lots of information, plus the friendly bicycle culture is alive and well, with people greeting each other and talking about the conditions of the trails they just took, giving advice and being nice. IMBA and WORS do events here and the trails are kept up and groomed. The Neillsville Area Trail Association is a small but powerful and devoted trail managers, and they do an accomplished job surpassing your bike trail expectations.
There are no showers there, so you will just do a birdbath and change clothes in the bathroom. In the winter, the warming house is open, warm, dry, big, friendly and I am pretty sure had a fireplace, but it is not open in warmer weather. You can camp here overnight, in either electric or non-electric sights. We did not camp, nor did I go look at the sites, but they were affordable, I think $13 a night? Not absolutely sure, but winter camping is also available.
Bring a picnic lunch and a book to chill out afterwards. There is not a lot of restaurants, grocery stores or bars right near by, Hatfield is 3 miles south and they have a little gas station. It is a pretty rural community, so plan accordingly with your cooler reflecting your post exercise preferences.
The main punchline here is it is totally worth seeking out this location if you like to ski, snowshoe, hike, dog walk, mountain bike. You will not be disappointed.

This tour was loaded with so much history and wonderful displays on top of all the old artifacts. The only bummer is public tours are only on Sundays from 1pm-4pm Memorial day - Labor day. This jail ran for 77 years up until 1974. This is a 3 story Victorian house with the attached county jail, busy 24 hours a day. The Sheriffs wife was included in these duties of cooking meals, laundry and she was unpaid as well. There are 2 floors of jail cells, 2 prisoners per cell, which held a total of 24 inmates. They have included so much more to see on this tour of exhibitions such as: military, telephone, radios, etc. This is well worth the visit and you can take pictures as well!

Wilderness Pursuit Horseback Adventures

Reviewed By OrangeGTO

Went riding with my 15 year old niece. I have horses and ride regularly, she rides at camps. Guide was young but attentive to our riding ability and interest in walking vs galloping, etc. Knew the trails. They were nice. Some open some single track, some wooded. Only downside was time spent riding on the road. Nice enough horses. Not beautiful but functional. Price was reasonable for the amount of time for the ride.
