This temple is absolutely STUNNING. I was blown away by the hysterically fun chair lift to the temple. The autumn leaves are positively glowing right now--- the perfect time to visit! I highly recommend purchasing the pass that allows you to go to the top of the mountain additional. I had the opportunity to watch a black kite glide about.

It was wonderful to be able to experience the natural places in Japan one way from the cities. We enjoyed a great drive through the Yaba-Hita-Hikosan National Park with Yabakei Gorge a key feature. It was a very nice side excursion on the way to Amagase by car.

Nakatsu castle tower is a museum of the Okudaira family, who were hereditary vassals of the Tokugawa family. Priceless heirlooms such as; a weapon that was used at the battle of Nagashino; armor and battle coats passed down and worn by successive generations; and writing in Tokugawa Ieyasu's own hand can be viewed by the general public.
The castle was around 15 minutes of way away from the Nakatsu Station. And the entrance fee was 400 yen per adult.
Beside the castle was the Nakatsu river. Therefore, the top of the castle overlooked great view of the river.
The castle was 5-story. From afar, it looked quite magnificent. Around the castle there were somehow several Japanese shrines.

The site was around 30 minutes of drive away from the Nakatsu Station. I took the city bus and the fare was 600 yen one-way.
The scenery was nice. However, the story of the cane was very meaningful. A monk built the tunnel with his bare hands to save people's lives and time.
Having said that, please be very careful about the bus schedule. The site was actually in the middle of nowhere.

If you are interested in the history of Japanese modernization you should pay a visit to this site. There is simple old house where Yukichi FUKUZAWA, one of the great 19th century modernizers, lived for a while. The adjacent museum shows numerous items related to Fukuzawa.
Fukuzawa Yukichi (1835 -1901) was a writer, teacher and entrepreneur who founded Keio University, the newspaper Jiji-Shinpō and the Institute for Study of Infectious Diseases. His ideas about government and social institutions made a lasting impression on Japanese society during the Meiji Era. He is regarded as one of the founders of modern Japan.
