Sanagi Island is a great place to visit if you're a cat lover. There are about a hundred cats on Sanagi Island. They are very friendly and photogenic. The only place to stay is a nice hostel. If you're only there for a day trip, you can get some lunch food at the hostel. We really enjoyed three days of wandering up and down the island photographing the cats. The host and hostess at the hostel do not speak much English, and I didn't speak much Japanese, but we got along just fine with sign language, our limited vocabularies and google translate. We actually had some long conversations about the status of the cats just standing side by side and reading each other's phones. I learned how to best use google translate. Short sentence, not long, complex sentences that can generate strange translations so that we end up all laughing once we realize what happened. The host and hostess are very kind, helpful and have a good sense of humor. It is a very peaceful place to visit.

Very helpful, informative, friendly and available guide/receptionist in English (and other languages). We wish we could attend a performance there someday in April. Very worth the visit.

Absolutely amazing experience, the awesome shrine is well worth the effort to go all the way up the 785 stone steps to the top. The view is wonderful and the many stone lanterns and small shrines along the path create a mystic atmosphere.

Well worth the effort if you are able to climb the 1368 steps!! You will feel enhanced with the achievement. Plenty of resting places on the way.. Don’t forget your water.
