We went there for Shichi-go-san (a festival to pray for the healthy growth of young children) and enjoyed the chrysanthemum show. If you are interested in Japanese flowers, visiting there in this season is highly recommended. Another recommendation is to walk through the road to Takamiya-saijo, the ceremonial place. You can enjoy the mysterious atmosphere and the silence in the forest there.

The train station has ticket machines in Japanese so we bought tickets at the ticket office no worries.

It was quite the adventure to get here. At Togo station, we stored our luggage in a locker then took a bus to Munakata Shrine. After a short walk around the grounds, we caught another bus to the port of Konominato. It was definitely a blustery November day, so we were pleased to find a modern building at the port with a comfortable waiting area and strong wifi.
Ferries to Oshima Island run on a limited schedule, so be sure to check your bus connections at Togo station, and give yourself plenty of time. We happened to take the ferry on a gale advisory day, which made for quite the rolling wave experience. The small-ish ferry boat was definitely tossed around, much to the chagrin of my teenage daughter. (There is an area for you to remove your shoes and lie flat, if you so desire.)
Once on stable ground, it was a quick walk to Nakatsu Shrine - just take a left on the main street. (There is very good signage.) The shrine is located in a pleasing setting. To add some adventure (more adventure?!) take the trail located directly behind the shrine, cross the street, and you'll see a torii made of wood for your hike up Mount Mitake. Be aware, however: So. Many. Steps.!!! There also was a "wild boar warning" sign, so pick up a hiking stick near the torii. We hiked up to the observation area, and could view the most sacred island - Oki no Shima. There are also additional steps to a small shrine (Mitake Shrine) once you reach the observation area. Take a peek! The hike to the top of Mitakesan took less than an hour one way.
>>a great website with an excellent map of Oshima Island for your adventure is: okinoshima-heritage.jp You can even download the detailed guide found there to iBooks. It's in English!
Note: The island of Oshima seemed almost deserted on the Saturday afternoon in November that we were there. Keep that in mind when planning for snacks, etc. Also, due to the limited bus schedule, we ended up taking a taxi back to Togo station when the ferry arrived back at Konominato. Total taxi fare was approximately $25 US

Visited the global Arena to watch the Sannix schools rugby tournament, the area has lodgings, a gymnasium, sporting fields, a martial arts hall plus many more facilities. There is a souvenir shop that also sells snacks and beverages. On the days of the rugby tournament they had food stalls set up too. It is set up in the hills and is surrounded by wonderful green crop fields. On the way there you can visit Hasshogu shrine or as the sign post reads Chofukuji temple. The arena is about 10km from Akama station and there is a bus the No. 75 but further investigation is needed to find out the stop. I would recommend it for sporting camps and as a spectator but it would not be interesting as a sightseeing spot.It was a well organised tournament and my family have fond memories of our visit

I stumbled across the shrine as I walked to the Global Arena, the sign post read Chofukuji temple 0.6 km, on the left as you walk along the main road, follow the road and the temple is not miss able ,straight in front of you., follow the many stairs to the top and you are greeted by a wonderful wooden temple and small wooden housings displaying artefacts, there is a garden area to walk through with seats so you can take in the serenity of the place, well worth a visit if you like the Japanese style shrines. There are toilet facilities and I wasn't charged a fee but like most places of worship a donation is appreciated bit not forced upon you.
