Lake Manyara National Park is a gem, sometimes less visited than the more famous Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. But it is well worth a visit. The vegetation is different, as it has dense tropical forest at the base of the steep cliffs that are the Rift Valley wall which is very pronounced in this location. In these forests are huge rare tropical trees such as Mahogany, Ficus, and Sycamore interspersed with massive old Baobabs. The Park is known for its rich birdlife along the shores and in the swampy areas. You might see species such as the large Southern Ground Hornbill and the Saddle Bill Stork, and Malachite Kingfishers. There are elephants, buffalo, varieties of antelope, blue monkeys and many baboons. The "tree dwelling lions" publicized in the Park are rather more a legend than something you will see. The lake has expanded significantly in the last few years, so you will see drowned forest areas now, but in them you will also likely see water-loving species of buck. Don't miss Lake Manyara National Park. Have a picnic, but take bug spray.

The central market is a rabbit-warren chock-a-block booths and displays of all that is fresh and locally produced. It's a sensory overload of colors, sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and things to touch. Best to go with a guide your first time through. It is overwhelming but a fabulous introduction to the people and culture of the city.

African Galleria is a professional gallery that deals in antiques, art, tribal art, Tanzanite and other gems, clothing, Maasai art, custom made jewelry (18k gold) and a lot more varieties of items, namely all assortment of carvings in Ebony, Rose wood, Mahogany, Teak in all sizes. Also a very good place to find beautiful Tanzanian souvenirs to bring home.
If you are spending time in the Karatu District of Tanzania, en route to or from Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park, or other destinations, you are likely to see this fabulous "store" on the outskirts of Manyara town which is at the intersection of routes you will take to these places. You will recognize it by the huge elephant statue outside. The Galleria is more than just a store for buying souvenirs and curios. Budget at least 30 minutes or an hour to visit, so that you can go through the mock-up Tanzanite mine; explore the galleries of carvings, fabrics and clothes, beadwork, pottery, and other crafts; and just indulge in the ambience of a rich "safari shopping experience". A casual restaurant, recently added, now gives visitors an expanded experience, so you could plan on having lunch here too. Also, if you are interested in jewelry, especially precious stones and TANZANITE, this store has an extensive collection of very fine, authenticated pieces with knowledgeable staff to assist you without making you feel you are being pressured. Whatever you buy will be well-wrapped for traveling and taking home, so this need not deter you from shopping. We make a point of stopping at the African Galleria every time we visit this area of Tanzania--we wouldn't miss it for anything. You will even be amused by the "wildlife statues at the entrance, including the big elephant and the crocodile that has spark plugs for teeth.
