Whitetail Mountain Resort

Winter resort features one of the region's longest half pipes in addition to 19 trails, snowboard park and night skiing every evening.

Reviewed By beachboundbabe - Maryland

Go to Whitetail every year, several times a season. Both kids really like skiing & snowboarding and ski conditions are as good as can be expected in this area. Do not expect a relaxing experience- food from both the Solstice restaurant & deli is awful. Do not know what happened from last year when food was delicious but will not eat another meal here. Also, they do not have a liquor license so no beer or wine FYI. I enjoy many other ski resorts- Seven Springs, Wisp, Massanutten are lovely. Nothing near by.

Greencastle Coffee Roasters

Reviewed By forthright - PA

Finally a source for coffee aficionados who have to limit caffeine! Don't know what's happening with the commercial coffee industry these days, but the quality of familiar brands is changing in an unappealing way (at least to our palates); and decaf has always been a hit or miss proposition. Some time ago we also discovered that decaf is exponentially better when freshly ground from freshly roasted beans and even began ordering green decaffeinated coffee beans for in-home roasting. End result: a lot of work for a little coffee and still a hit or miss situation. Enter: Greencastle Coffee Roasters. These guys deliver a high-quality product with a comforting consistency that keeps us coming back month after month. We've tried all the blends and exotics, but our favorites continue to be the Decaf Guatemala Antigua and Decaf Costa Rica varieties for pure, rich, smooth, old-fashioned "honest" coffee flavor. These roasters do a brisk business, and the product is always fresh. I store my whole beans in the freezer in the original bags inside a plastic bag with zip closure and only grind what I need for immediate use. Don't believe the popular advice disseminated elsewhere to store roasted beans at room temp. Your freezer is your best friend for keeping those freshly roasted beans fresh! The service is always prompt, pleasant, and efficient. [PS - There are awesome teas and exotic rices to be found here, as well as a small Asian grocery section in back, and freshly roasted peanuts on Wednesdays!]

Cowans Gap State Park

Reviewed By Donna S - New Cumberland, Pennsylvania

My husband Steve and I have been coming to this dear like park for about 14 years and we just love it for a nice daytrip out in nature! We typically hike the easy trail that goes around the lake in about 45 minutes or so, stopping from time to time to take a photo, drink in the view or enjoy the "wow shot" from the dock! Once we make it around the lake we often enjoy their pavilion area or one of the lone tables near the lake for a nice picnic and a good game or two of Sequence before heading home! We would highly recommend this destination to anyone who is looking for a scenic lakefront stroll that is easy and fairly short! They even have a restroom half way around the lake trail, just a few steps off the path, which is so nice, just in case for children or whomever is in need, making this a really accommodating trail with creature comforts!

Knob Hall Winery

It only took 200 years... for the Seibert family to bring wine to Clear Spring! Growing, nurturing and blending award winning wines is our trade-- drinking and enjoying them with good company is our passion.

Reviewed By Thomas - Genevi... H - Higham, Suffolk, UK

We popped in to the Knob Hall Winery after a morning along the Appalachian trail; however, make no mistake, this vineyard/Winery is quite a bit away from anything...it requires 10-15 minutes drive west of Hagerstown.
The setup is very nice, with the very large, 200 year old barn as a centerpiece. There is plenty of outdoor seating if you want to picnic. Kids and dogs (on a short leash) are welcome, and were present. Wine tasting is inside the barn.
Wine tasting for your choice of six (6) wines was $5/person. Choices include 2-3 varietals within dry red, dry white, sweet white, and rose. Wine is about $22/bottle (+/- based on wine). The actual wine tasting experience and info about the wines was ok; nothing spectacular. The wines were really good.
Light Food is also available, and includes a very good homemade hummus, a cheese & cracker tray, and a few other options. The hummus was amazing.

Buchanan's Birthplace State Park

Reviewed By CONNvacationers - Cromwell, Connecticut

We also enjoyed Buchanan's Birthplace State Park and agree with all of the other reviews. The log cabin pictured is the birth location of President Buchanan and was located in the park where the pyramid now stands. The pyramid was dedicated by President Buchanan's niece. 4.2 miles to the southeast in Mercersburg is the location where President Buchanan grew up. His father moved the family there and had a business on the first floor and the family lived upstairs. Today there is a restaurant on the first floor - it was not open when we were there so I don't know if it is possible to enter the upstairs where the Buchanan family lived. Directly across the street is the home where President Buchanan's niece grew up - she assumed the role of First Lady for the President as he never married. There are informative signs on the street. The log cabin moved to various locations, eventually to the Mercersburg Academy. It sits just south of the running track, across the street from the gymnasium. It was locked when we saw it but one can look in through the windows. The academy campus is very pretty.

I believe this is probably the biggest covered bridge I have ever seen...and like the park itself was very well maintained and a fun place to hike. The only complaint I have is that the frisbee trails were not very well marked for the next hole. Other than that, a very nice place to visit!

Wonderful place. The alpacas are simply beautiful and I love how curious they are. They all bunched around us to check us out. We got a priceless introduction to alpaca psychology by Kelly (especially around their mating habits, in a perfectly kid-friendly way).
Moreover, the owner helped us as if we were family friend to replace and fix the tire that got flat just a few miles before. Highly recommended.

Pennsylvania Welcome Center

Reviewed By Valerie S - York, PA

I stopped in the I-81 Greencastle PA Welcome Center as I drove north on the interstate.

As soon as I entered the Welcome Center, I was greeted by a very helpful woman who asked how she could assist me. Everything I asked about, she was able to find immediately, and make other suggestions. She also gave me maps that would be helpful and showed me distances on their master map at the desk.

Example: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Bedford Springs, Gettysburg, Lancaster ( she asked about Amish attractions), Falling Water (Frank Lloyd Wright's house) - and suggested Kentucky Knob, another FLW home; Wellsboro, Poconos, PA Laurel Highlands and the PA Outdoor Adventure Guide.

Wow!! That's all I can say!! She was fabulous. Everything was free of charge - no gift shop which was fine with me.

Restrooms were huge, room for plenty of travelers, and wee exceptionally clean.

Picnic tables available - a nice rest stop and information center.

Greencastle Antique Mall

I usually visit every few months. They have a little bit of everything. Furniture, art glass, books, other collectibles. They have a webpage. They are open everyday except Wed. Prices seem to be reasonable, at least on what I am looking for. I usually find something to buy. Workers are friendly and helpful.
