Saef lives in Chinguetti. He has collected many ancient manuscripts from different libraries around town. Chinguetti is said to be the 7th most important Islamic cultural centre in the world. Saef is a passionate storyteller. He can endlessly tell stories about caravans with 30,000+ camels crossing town and bartering goods between Senegal or Niger with Morocco, Algeria and Europe. The last caravan crossed town in the early 1970s before 4WDs took over. Saef does his best to ensure that the ancient books are properly preserved, which they currently sadly are not despite promises made by UNESCO or different international corporate foundations. He says that those donations never happened. It has now become an emergency to ensure a state of the art preservation of this world heritage for it not to disappear forever.

Fishermen return from the sea each evening and sell their fresh catch at this portside fish market.
Loved our trip here, which was put together by Time For Mauritania, who were fantastic. I would thoroughly recommend them and the sight of so many boats returning to the shore after a day’s fishing was incredible. As far as I could see, we were the only tourists when we visited, and although it’s a working port, some locals grill fish on the beach and we were offered to try some. Mauritania is still emerging as a travel destination and has a long way to go, but get there before it becomes too popular !!
